Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky attended a crucial meeting with international supporters in Germany on Friday, aiming to rally additional backing for Ukraine just days after one of the war’s deadliest Russian attacks. This meeting followed a devastating missile strike on Poltava, which resulted in 55 casualties and over 300 injuries.

Zelensky’s schedule includes a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and a visit to Italy after the gathering at Ramstein Air Base, located southwest of Frankfurt. The event, hosted by U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, brought together representatives from around 50 nations. The primary focus of discussions will be on enhancing Ukraine’s air defenses and encouraging allies to increase their defense capabilities.

Maj-Gen. Pat Ryder, a Pentagon spokesman, emphasized the importance of Ukraine to both U.S. and international security. He noted that the ongoing support from allies plays a vital role in Ukraine’s struggle for freedom and sovereignty. This meeting is particularly significant as Russian forces continue to advance in the Donbas region. Russian President Vladimir Putin recently stated that capturing eastern Ukraine is his main objective in the ongoing conflict.

Since the onset of its offensive in February 2022, Russia has shifted its goals after failing to seize Kyiv, now focusing on dominating eastern Ukraine. While Ukraine’s recent counter-offensive in Russia’s Kursk region took many by surprise, Putin insisted that it had not impeded Moscow’s progress. He asserted that the Russian army has intensified its offensive operations despite setbacks.

In a notable development, Ukraine reported reclaiming part of the eastern town of New York, marking its first success in that area in months. The Azov Brigade announced that their efforts, driven by high morale and professionalism, helped stabilize the situation and regain control.

Uncertain Future for Ukraine Support

As Ukraine’s biggest ally, the U.S. has provided significant military aid, amounting to €51.6 billion (approximately $56 billion). However, uncertainty hangs over future funding due to the upcoming U.S. elections in November, which could potentially bring Ukraine-skeptic Donald Trump back into power.

Germany, Ukraine’s second-largest supporter, faces growing domestic pressure regarding its assistance to Kyiv. This comes amid a contentious debate over the 2025 budget and regional elections in Saxony and Thuringia, where far-right and far-left parties, opposing government support for Ukraine, gained traction.

France, another key ally, is experiencing its own political crisis, further complicating the situation for Ukraine. Throughout this turmoil, Zelensky has consistently advocated for the provision of long-range missiles to counter Russian aggression, although the U.S. and Germany have hesitated to deliver such weaponry.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov has been proactive in laying the groundwork for Zelensky’s visit, engaging in discussions in the U.S., Britain, France, and Germany in recent days. Zelensky is also expected to address recent government changes, including the resignation of Ukraine’s top diplomat, Dmytro Kuleba, marking a significant shift since the invasion began.

Ahead of the meeting, Britain announced plans to supply Ukraine with 650 lightweight missiles by the year’s end, aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s air defense capabilities. Concurrently, European allies are enhancing their military readiness in response to the escalating threat posed by Russia. Notably, Germany has recently operationalized its first Iris-T air defense system, having previously delivered several to Ukraine to intercept Russian missiles, rockets, and drones.
