Kebbi State, September 6, 2024 — The Kebbi State Police Command has announced a major breakthrough in its fight against banditry with the elimination of a suspected bandit and the apprehension of two others.
In a statement issued on Friday, police spokesperson Nafiu Abubakar detailed the successful operation that also led to the recovery of three AK-47 rifles and various ammunition.
The statement outlined that on June 21, 2024, armed bandits on motorcycles stormed Kurgeye village in the Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area, kidnapping two residents, Malami Danladi and his son, Bello Danladi.
In response to the distress call, a specialized team of 36 Police Mobile Force (PMF) personnel, in collaboration with the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, launched a pursuit. This led to a confrontation with the bandits, resulting in one bandit being shot dead and the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, an empty magazine, and a Bajaj motorcycle.
In another significant operation on September 3, 2024, security forces conducting joint patrols with vigilantes along the Ribah-Kanya Road intercepted and detained two suspects, Isiya Alhaji Usman and Yunusa Yusuf. These individuals are believed to be connected with the banditry activities plaguing the region.
A search of their possession yielded a K2 rifle, a modified AK-47 rifle with three magazines, and 66 rounds of live ammunition.
Kebbi State Commissioner of Police Bello Sani praised the officers for their dedication and urged continued vigilance and collaboration among security agencies to combat banditry and restore stability in the region.
The arrested suspects and the recovered weapons have been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and legal proceedings.

A Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has sentenced Sunmonu Olasunkanmi Thaoban to four years in prison for laundering ₦16 million by disguising its illegal origins and converting it into a 2018 black G-Wagon Jeep.

Guilty Plea & Sentencing: Justice Akintayo Aluko handed down the sentence on Thursday after Thaoban pleaded guilty to a two-count EFCC charge, alongside an alternative fine option of ₦1.8 million.

The Offense: Prosecutors stated that Thaoban acted as a middleman in 2023, funneling illicit funds to purchase the luxury vehicle, violating the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

Asset Forfeiture: In addition to the prison term, the judge ordered the permanent forfeiture of both the convict’s G-Wagon and mobile phone to the Federal Government.

In a separate proceeding, Justice Aluko also convicted four Bureau de Change (BDC) operators—Umar Muhammad Lamido, Yusuf Musa Yusuf, Abdulmuhimin Mahmud, and Muhammed Musa—for conducting unauthorized foreign exchange transactions outside the official market. Following their guilty pleas, each received a 12-month prison sentence with an option of a ₦100,000 fine.
A Delta State High Court has handed down death sentences to two individuals for their involvement in the 2018 killing of Delta State University (DELSU) undergraduate Elozino Ogege, following a ruling that found them guilty. Meanwhile, a third co-defendant facing charges related to the same incident was discharged and acquitted.
