With just 15 days left until the pivotal Edo Gubernatorial election, the future of Edo’s residents hangs in the balance. The decision voters make will impact not only their own lives but also the lives of generations to come. Olumide Osaigbovo Akpata, the Labour Party’s flagbearer, has laid out an ambitious and transformative vision for Edo State. From healthcare to education, infrastructure, and security, Akpata’s plans have generated excitement and hope among Edolites eager for real change.
For those unfamiliar with Akpata’s healthcare plan, this article sheds light on his strategy to make healthcare accessible and affordable for all residents. His vision is not just talk—it’s rooted in personal experience and a deep understanding of the healthcare challenges Edolites face daily.
Having grown up with close ties to the healthcare sector through his father, who was a medical practitioner, Akpata has long been aware of the limited access, substandard services, and prohibitively high costs that threaten the well-being of the state’s residents. In his manifesto, which has sent shockwaves through the opposition camps since its release last month, Akpata revealed that he himself is alive today only by the grace of God, having survived a life-threatening illness that no hospital in Edo could treat at the time.
Under an Akpata-led administration, the healthcare sector will undergo a complete transformation. His government will ensure that every one of Edo’s 190 wards is equipped with a fully functional primary healthcare facility. Akpata also plans to attract and retain more skilled healthcare workers by providing better incentives and world-class working conditions. He promises a consistent supply of medicines and vaccines in state-run hospitals and aims to expand the Edo Health Insurance Scheme to cover vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, and children under five. Additionally, Akpata is committed to working with Edolites living with disabilities and bringing in private investments to strengthen the state’s healthcare infrastructure.
