The leading Edo gubernatorial candidate, Olumide Osaigbovo Akpata, recently completed his North American campaign tour, leaving an indelible mark as he, alongside his running mate Kadiri Yusuf and their team, captivated the entire continent. Their presence sparked widespread enthusiasm among Diaspora Edolites across multiple states in America, where Akpata engaged in meaningful dialogues about the future of Edo State.
The North American tour, which commenced at the end of August in Detroit, Michigan, and culminated just yesterday in the dynamic city of New York, was a resounding success. Throughout this tour, Akpata passionately articulated his ambitious vision for a prosperous Edo State under his leadership—a vision where every Edo citizen, both at home and abroad, would take pride in their heritage. He underscored the crucial role of support from Diaspora Edolites in realizing this vision, making it clear that their involvement is vital to transforming Edo into a beacon of progress and development.
During his interactions, Akpata outlined a comprehensive plan to address the myriad challenges that have plagued Edo State for years. He pledged to tackle issues such as the lack of development, poor infrastructure, rampant thuggery, cultism, corruption, inadequate educational systems, unemployment, and healthcare deficiencies. Akpata’s commitment to eradicating these problems resonated strongly with the Diaspora community, who saw in him a leader capable of delivering tangible change.
As the Edo gubernatorial election draws near, Akpata’s message is clear: it’s time to end the era of stagnation and usher in a new chapter of growth and prosperity. He made the remark during an interview on Arise News on Wednesday, where he was asked whether he would withdraw in Obi’s favour if the former Labour Party candidate wins the party’s primary.
Atiku confirmed he would respect the outcome, saying he is prepared to step aside for any winner, including Obi.
“Of course, if he is a contender, why not?” he added when pressed further.
He also noted that other aspirants such as Rabiu Kwankwaso and Rotimi Amaechi are also in the race for the ADC ticket.
The former presidential candidate explained that his stance reflects democratic principles, stressing that candidates can emerge either through consensus or election.
Atiku further expressed confidence that the North remains a strong political base for him ahead of 2027, saying the region continues to show unity and support in past elections.
