UEFA Unveils New Champions League Format for 2024-25 Season: What You Need to Know
UEFA Unveils New Champions League Format for 2024-25 Season: What You Need to Know....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
UEFA has officially announced a significant overhaul of the Champions League format, set to take effect from the 2024-25 season. The European football governing body emphasizes that the new structure is designed to prioritize selection based on playing “merit,” ensuring that top teams face off more frequently.
Key Changes in the New Format
The upcoming changes will see an increase in the number of participating teams, with 36 clubs competing in what is now called the league phase, formerly known as the group stage. This expansion provides four additional teams the opportunity to challenge Europe’s elite clubs.
Unified League Competition
Instead of the traditional eight groups of four teams, all 36 clubs will now compete in a unified league. Each team will play eight matches against eight different opponents—four at home and four away—compared to the previous format of playing three opponents twice. Teams will be ranked in a single table, heightening the competition as every match result will directly influence the final standings.
Seeding and Opponent Selection
Teams will be divided into four seeding pots to determine their eight opponents. Each team will face two opponents from each pot, ensuring a balanced level of competition throughout the league phase.
Allocation of Four Additional Slots
The revised format also introduces four additional slots for the league phase, distributed as follows:
- Slot One: Awarded to the third-placed team in the domestic league of the association ranked fifth in UEFA’s coefficient rankings.
- Slot Two: Granted to a domestic champion, increasing the number of clubs qualifying via the Champions path from four to five.
- Slots Three and Four: Allocated to the associations with the best collective performance in the previous season, offering these associations an additional spot for the next-best team in their domestic league.
Qualification and Knockout Phase
The top eight teams in the league phase will automatically advance to the round of 16. Teams finishing between 9th and 24th will compete in a two-legged knockout phase play-off to secure their spot in the round of 16. Those finishing 25th or lower will be eliminated, with no opportunity to drop into the UEFA Europa League.
In the knockout phase, teams ranked between 9th and 16th will be seeded and drawn against teams ranked 17th to 24th, with the higher-seeded teams hosting the return leg. The winners will join the top eight finishers in the round of 16, and from this stage onward, the competition will follow the existing knockout format leading up to the final.
Changes to Europa League and Conference League
UEFA is also revamping the Europa League and Europa Conference League (soon to be known as the UEFA Conference League). Both competitions will mirror the Champions League’s new structure, with 36 teams competing in the league phase. In the Europa League, teams will play eight matches against eight different opponents, while in the Europa Conference League, teams will play six matches against six different opponents.
Match Calendar Adjustments
The Champions League and Europa League matches will be held from September to January, with Europa Conference League matches scheduled from September to December. Each competition will have its own exclusive matchweek, ensuring no overlap in fixtures. Champions League matches will continue to be played on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with Europa League and Conference League matches on Thursdays.
The final matchday of each league phase will see all games played simultaneously, adding to the excitement and drama as teams vie for their positions in the knockout stages.

Chelsea Palmer Avoids Surgery for Groin Injury, Maresca Confirms
Chelsea forward Cole Palmer will not need immediate surgery on a groin injury that forced him off during Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Manchester United, manager Enzo Maresca said Monday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Palmer, 23, has been dealing with the problem for several weeks and managed only 21 minutes at Old Trafford before leaving the pitch. The setback has raised concerns over the England international’s fitness as Chelsea prepare for a busy run of matches.
Maresca, however, moved to calm fears of a long-term absence.
“The medical staff didn’t mention to me about surgery,” Maresca told reporters. “I don’t know if in the next days or the next weeks, but I don’t think so, to be honest.”
The Italian coach said Palmer was determined to play against United despite being less than fully fit.
“He made a huge effort on Saturday to try to play the game,” Maresca said. “He did the test, and he was OK, but not 100 percent. He wanted to be there to help his teammates. Unfortunately, it was painful, so we decided to change it. Now it’s more day-by-day, week-by-week, game-by-game to see how it is and then decide what we do.”
Set to Miss League Cup Match
Palmer is expected to sit out Chelsea’s League Cup third-round tie on Tuesday at Lincoln City, a League One club currently enjoying strong form.
Chelsea will also be without midfielder Romeo Lavia and defender Benoit Badiashile, leaving Maresca with limited options for the trip.
The coach suggested he may turn to Chelsea’s youth academy to fill gaps in the squad, but admitted the approach carries risk in a knockout competition.
“These are the games that worry me most, because you can slip up very easily,” Maresca said. “Football is full of these kinds of games, and I am very worried about that.”
Key Player for Chelsea
Palmer, who joined Chelsea from Manchester City in 2023, has been one of the team’s most important players over the past year. His creativity and ability to score in big matches helped Chelsea finish strongly last season and earned him a place in England’s squad for Euro 2024.
This season, injuries have limited his impact. He has started only two Premier League matches and has yet to complete a full 90 minutes.
Chelsea fans will be hoping Palmer avoids a lengthy spell on the sidelines. With the club competing in the Premier League, domestic cups and European football, his presence is seen as vital to Maresca’s first campaign in charge.
Injury Concerns Pile Up
Palmer’s setback adds to a growing list of fitness issues at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have struggled with injuries to key players over the past two seasons, a problem that has disrupted consistency on the pitch.
Maresca, who took over as manager in the summer, has emphasized the need for patience as he builds a team capable of challenging for trophies. But he acknowledged that squad depth will be tested in the coming weeks.
Looking Ahead
For now, Chelsea are focusing on their midweek trip to Lincoln, followed by a return to Premier League action at home next weekend.
Palmer’s condition will continue to be monitored by medical staff, with updates expected before the next league fixture.
While surgery is not on the table, the decision to manage the injury on a game-by-game basis means Maresca faces uncertainty over when his star forward will return at full strength.
“Cole is very important for us,” Maresca said. “We need him, but we also need to protect him. It’s a balance, and we will see how he improves.”

Transfer Race Heats Up as Chelsea, PSG, Galatasaray Battle for Osimhen
Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen has become one of the most sought-after players in Europe this summer, with Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and Galatasaray reportedly locked in a three-way battle for his signature.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to renowned Turkish journalist Yakup Çınar, the trio of Champions League-bound clubs are interested in signing the Napoli striker on a permanent deal. However, the competition doesn’t end in Europe—two lucrative offers from Saudi Arabian clubs are also on the table.
“There are currently PSG, Chelsea and Galatasaray possibilities on the table,” Çınar was quoted as saying via Habersarikirmizi. “There are also two big offers from Saudi Arabia. The decision is awaited.”
Osimhen, who spent the current season on loan at Galatasaray, is yet to make a final decision about his future. Reports indicate that the Turkish champions have given him one week to decide whether he will commit to a permanent stay or return to Napoli.
Despite speculation, Osimhen’s next move remains uncertain, though his standout performances continue to draw admiration across the continent. All three European suitors—Chelsea, PSG, and Galatasaray—have secured Champions League football next season, making the decision even more pivotal.
