Gombe Governor Urges ASUU GSU Branch to Hold Off Strike, Promises Immediate Action on Allowance Demands....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Yahaya has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Gombe State University (GSU) branch, to reconsider their planned strike. The plea was made on Thursday during a meeting at the Gombe State Government House, where Yahaya was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Ibrahim Njodi.
The governor’s request came as a delegation from the ASUU National Executive Council visitation panel to GSU visited the government house. The state government assured the union of its commitment to addressing their demands, promising to allocate N947,669,909.13 million by Monday to cover Earned Academic Allowance and other pending entitlements.
Yahaya emphasized that the upcoming State Executive Council meeting on Monday would address the strike threat and prioritize the resolution of ASUU’s demands. He acknowledged the union’s concerns but urged patience, noting, “What I’m saying is that ASUU should be patient. The question of going on strike now, like the Convener pointed out, is not going to solve any problem.”
The promised funds are intended to cover several critical areas, including excess workload, responsibility allowances, postgraduate study grants, and outstanding promotion arrears for 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. The governor assured that these issues would receive expedited attention during the council meeting.
Professor Daniel Gongula, who led the ASUU NEC visitation panel, praised the governor for his focus on education but emphasized the importance of the government fulfilling its promises within the agreed timeline. He mentioned that other states had already implemented the minimum wage adjustments and that lecturers, like other workers, face the same economic pressures.
