Late yesterday, Olumide Osaigbovo Akpata, the Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate, launched his highly anticipated manifesto just one month before the pivotal Edo Gubernatorial election that will determine the state’s future. The manifesto’s release has ignited widespread discussion online, with many expressing optimism about Akpata’s vision for Edo.
The former NBA President, Akpata, who has extensively toured the entire state and is currently on another tour, has shown a deep understanding of the challenges facing Edolites, particularly under a government that has failed to prioritize the people. His engagement with citizens has revealed a clear disconnect between the current administration’s promises and the reality on the ground.
One of the most pressing issues highlighted in Akpata’s manifesto is the dire state of electricity in Edo, despite the PDP-led government’s expenditure of billions on the sector. Akpata attributes this failure to embezzlement, lack of transparency, greed, and corruption within the current administration. He expressed his outrage at the situation, stating, “It is unacceptable that something as essential as electricity remains The problems are numerous and cut unavailable to our people. When I across almost all aspects of our visited Abudu and Urhonigbe in existence as a people and as a State. Orhionmwon LGA (a local government But let us not focus only on the problems. that sits on the largest inland gas Let me tell you about my vision for deposits in Nigeria), I was painfully Edo State and my plans to make things reminded that both towns and indeed better. the entire LGA have not had any form of public supply of electricity for over 10 years!”
Akpata’s proposed solution to the electricity crisis is nothing short of transformative. His plan includes fostering a conducive environment for private sector investment in power generation and distribution, with a focus on mini-grids and renewable energy sources such as biomass, solar, hydro, and wind. He intends to attract both local and international investors, collaborate with the Benin Electricity Distribution Company to improve power supply across the state, secure capital from development banks, and ensure that streetlights on metropolitan roads are fully operational, thereby enhancing security and improving the quality of life for all Edolites.
