Multi-Billion Naira Drug Scam: Kano Anti-Corruption Agency Arrests Top Officials
Multi-Billion Naira Drug Scam: Kano Anti-Corruption Agency Arrests Top Officials ....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission has made significant strides in its fight against corruption by arresting five individuals, including high-ranking officials, in connection with an alleged multi-billion naira drug supply scam. Among those apprehended is Alhaji Mohammed Kabara, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
The commission’s crackdown also extended to Alhaji Abdullahi Bashir, Chairman of the Association for Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano State, who doubles as the Chairman of Tauroni Local Government Area. These arrests highlight the commission’s commitment to tackling corruption at all levels of government.
Kabiru Kabiru, the Public Relations Officer of the commission, confirmed these developments to the press on Wednesday. He emphasized that the anti-graft agency is leaving no stone unturned in its investigation.
In a related move, the commission also detained Garba Kwankwaso, the Managing Director of Novomed Pharmaceuticals and nephew of the National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso. This arrest ties the pharmaceutical company to the alleged scam, further expanding the scope of the investigation.
The suspects are accused of colluding to unlawfully award a contract to Novomed Pharmaceuticals for the supply of drugs to 38 local government areas (LGAs) across Kano State. This action allegedly breached public procurement laws, raising serious concerns about the integrity of the procurement process.
Preliminary findings from the investigation reveal that each of the 38 LGAs involved paid N9.150 million to Novomed Pharmaceuticals for drugs that were never delivered. This has left a significant gap in the healthcare supply chain, with funds allocated for essential medical supplies seemingly misappropriated.
Kabiru noted that the commission is diligently working to uncover the full extent of the scam and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. He also confirmed that all suspects are currently in the commission’s custody, where they are cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
