Tragedy struck in Maiduguri, Borno State, when a devastating fire claimed the lives of Mallam Gerba Bala Abubakar, former Chief Registrar of the Borno Cooperatives Society, his wife, and two other female family members. The incident occurred on Sunday morning at their residence on Damboa Road.
According to a family source, the fire is suspected to have been caused by an electrical surge. The tragic event has left the community in shock and mourning. A close friend of the deceased shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook, describing Abubakar as a “very humble” and “down-to-earth” individual. He expressed deep sorrow at the loss, noting that Abubakar perished alongside beloved members of his immediate family.
The friend recounted a recent conversation with Abubakar, where they discussed contemporary issues. He had planned to visit Abubakar in his new home in Maiduguri, unaware that it would be their last conversation. The deceased, who had retired as Chief Registrar of Cooperatives Societies with the Borno State Government, had been working with a private borehole drilling company after his retirement.
The family has since been laid to rest in Maiduguri, with prayers offered for their souls. “A very humble and down-to-earth personality is gone along with cherished members of his immediate family. May Allah (swt) admit them into Aljannah Firdausih,” the friend concluded.
