Former Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka, has advocated for the resolution of all election petitions before the swearing-in of elected officials. Speaking on Channels Television’s “Sunday Politics,” the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain emphasized that such a move would significantly strengthen Nigeria’s electoral process.
Chidoka highlighted the importance of transparency and accuracy in election results. He called for the scanning of ballot papers and the appointment of election auditors to verify the results. According to him, “All petitions must end before swearing-in. We must ensure that no one takes advantage of any loopholes in the election process. All paper ballots should be scanned, and election auditors should be appointed to thoroughly examine the results.”
He further pointed out that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has the authority to review election results within seven days, a mechanism that he believes has been underutilized. “INEC should compare the BVAS data with the entered results and cancel any inappropriate outcomes,” Chidoka stated.
Additionally, the former minister advocated for the establishment of Election Offences Tribunals, as recommended in the Justice Uwais report, to address electoral malpractices effectively.
Chidoka’s proposals aim to enhance the credibility of Nigeria’s elections, ensuring that elected officials assume office only after any disputes have been thoroughly resolved.
