Police Demand Protest Leaders’ Details To Prevent Chaos, Citing EndSARS TragedyThe Nigerian Police Force has clarified its stance on the request for details of individuals planning to participate in the nationwide protest scheduled for August 1-10, 2024.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Naija News reports that the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyi Adejobi, issued a statement on Sunday denying accusations of attempting to rewrite the constitution by demanding protest organizers’ details.

Adejobi emphasized that Police IGP Olukayode Egbetokun supports citizens’ rights to freedom of association and expression but stresses the importance of peaceful assembly.

He explained that requesting details of protest organizers is a standard procedure to facilitate effective communication, ensure participants’ safety, and prevent unlawful activities.

Adejobi noted that allowing anonymous groups to operate could jeopardize national peace and stability, potentially leading to the same pain, sorrow, and destruction seen during the 2020 EndSARS protests.

The statement read, “The Nigeria Police Force addresses recent accusations made by activist Deji Adeyanju and others, alleging that the IGP is trying to rewrite the Constitution by requesting details of protest organizers. It is crucial to clarify that the IGP has never denied citizens their constitutional right to freedom of association and expression but has consistently emphasized the need for peaceful assembly and expression. The Nigeria Police holds the responsibility to ensure that activities, including protests, do not threaten national security.

“Requesting details of protest organizers, including schedules, locations, and routes, is a standard procedure to facilitate effective communication, ensure participants’ safety, and prevent unlawful activities. It is also vital for Deji Adeyanju to understand that this request aligns with the interest of defense, public safety, public order, public morality, or public health as outlined in Section 45 (1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“It is essential to know who is planning the assembly (protests) in each state, as allowing anonymous groups to operate unchecked could jeopardize the country’s peace and stability, causing pain, sorrow, and tears as seen during the 2020 violent EndSARS protests. If organized labor and other recognized bodies were involved, it would provide a more structured and safer environment for public protests.

“The Police urge Mr. Adeyanju and other organizers not to mislead Nigerians. We call on them to work together to uphold the security and well-being of our nation.”

Residents across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are urgently demanding stronger government action and better waste management alternatives to curb criminal activities increasingly linked to local waste scavengers, widely known as ‘Baban bola’.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

    • A Disguise for Crime: While many operate as ordinary waste pickers by day, concerns are rising that some use the title as a cover to burglarize homes, pick pockets, rob residents, vandalize government assets, and harass citizens in gangs.

    • Suburbs Under Pressure: Communities like Nyanya, Karu, Jikwoyi, Mararaba, and Masaka have experienced an influx of scavengers, with locals noting that porous borders and lax security are turning Abuja into a hotspot for crime and kidnappings.

    • Victim Accounts: Residents like Mama Amina and Ifeanyi Ike report nighttime break-ins and point out that a lack of structured domestic waste disposal systems inadvertently empowers criminals operating under the guise of scavenging. Meanwhile, Suleman Danladi attributes the growth of the sector partly to displaced farmers fleeing northern insurgencies.

    • The Scavengers’ Perspective: Conversely, workers like Ibrahim Dantata maintain that the job is a means of economic survival to feed their families amid scarce employment opportunities, while Adamu notes that their internal groups occasionally punish members caught stealing.

    • Expert Recommendations: Security expert Mr. Ndu Nwokolo warns that unmonitored scavenging exposes communities to hooliganism, knife attacks, and surveillance. He urges the FCT Administration to enforce bans on indiscriminate refuse disposal, restrict scavenging, and redirect these youths into skills acquisition programs while fixing the city’s waste management framework.

Ten Nigerian players are set to feature in the 2026/2027 Premier League season, with the Coventry City duo of Frank Onyeka and Taiwo Awoniyi among the first to get their campaigns underway.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The return of Awoniyi and Onyeka to the top flight got off to a difficult start as Coventry suffered a 3-0 defeat to defending champions Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Friday night, August 21. Onyeka played a major role in helping Coventry return to the Premier League after a 25-year absence, while Awoniyi joined the club just four days prior to the Arsenal fixture, giving the pair little time to settle into the squad.

Semi Ajayi has also returned to the Premier League after helping Hull City secure promotion, starting in their play-off final victory over Middlesbrough. Ajayi, who previously made 33 appearances for West Bromwich Albion during the 2020/21 campaign, brings valuable top-flight experience to Hull City’s squad. Fellow newcomer David Akintola also joins the Premier League at age 30 following stints across Denmark, Norway, Cyprus, and Turkey.

Brighton teenager Zadok Yohanna joins the English top flight after signing a five-year contract from Swedish club AIK following an impressive run of goals and assists. Meanwhile, Brentford has included Super Eagles centre-back Benjamin Fredrick in their first-team squad after he signed a new four-year contract extension in July.

Established names like Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, and Ola Aina return as core figures for their respective clubs. Iwobi, who recently earned his 100th cap for Nigeria, joins Bassey as Fulham prepares to host Chelsea. Aina continues to anchor Nottingham Forest’s defense following a contract extension through 2028, and Chuba Akpom returns to the Premier League with Ipswich Town after finishing as the Championship’s top scorer during their promotion campaign.
