The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intensified its anti-narcotics operations by upgrading the skills of its Canine Unit handlers and service dogs. A total of eleven personnel from the Canine Unit—including the Unit Commander, eight handlers, and two veterinary doctors—alongside five interested officers from Lagos commands, participated in the program alongside their service dogs. The curriculum focused on modern detection techniques, advanced obedience and control, scent imprinting, search patterns, and handler safety. Teams also engaged in practical, real-life simulation exercises at key locations such as the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) baggage hall, the NAHCO export shed, and APM Terminals Apapa.

Highlighting the importance of the initiative, NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) stated in a release signed by Media and Advocacy Director Femi Babafemi that canine assets remain a vital weapon against increasingly sophisticated drug syndicates. While acknowledging current logistical and manpower hurdles—such as the need for more service dogs and boarding facilities—Marwa confirmed that plans are in motion to bridge these gaps and establish the refresher course as a regular annual exercise.

Having previously played for France at the youth level, he has switched his international allegiance to Nigeria. With both Victor Osimhen and Paul Onuachu sidelined by fitness issues, he stands in line for a potential debut later this month.

Isaac James

The 22-year-old has earned his first senior invitation as a left-back following impressive displays for Portuguese club Alverca. James has been brought in to bolster Chelle’s options on the left flank following Zaidu Sanusi’s injury. Beyond the AFCON qualifiers, he is also named in the squad for Nigeria’s friendly against Russia on October 6, presenting another chance to make his international bow.

Moses Usor

Rounding out the trio is 24-year-old forward Moses Usor, who comes off a phenomenal 2025/26 campaign with Austrian side LASK. Usor played a central role as LASK clinched a historic domestic league and cup double while securing the club’s first-ever qualification for the Champions League.
