Blood On The Highway: Nigerian Customs Officer Killed In Smuggling Face-OffTragedy struck the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) as Inspector Hamza Abdullahi Elenwo was killed during a confrontation with a suspected smuggler. Inspector Elenwo, who was part of the Federal Operations Unit, Zone B, was involved in a high-stakes chase when a vehicle carrying smuggled goods collided with him. Despite being rushed to the General Hospital Kazaure and later transferred to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Katsina, Elenwo succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead by medical personnel. His body has since been laid to rest in Katsina according to Islamic traditions.
In a statement released on July 12, 2024, Superintendent Isah Sulaiman, the Public Relations Officer for Zone B, expressed profound sorrow over the officer’s death. He described the incident as a tragic loss and highlighted the bravery of Elenwo in the line of duty.
Comptroller Ahmadu Shuaibu, on behalf of the unit, extended his condolences to Elenwo’s family and vowed that justice would be pursued. A suspect has been apprehended and is currently in custody at the Gwiwa Division of the Nigeria Police Force in Jigawa State.
The Comptroller reassured that the Customs operatives will continue their efforts against smuggling despite this setback. Inspector Hamza Abdullahi Elenwo, originally from Rivers State, joined the NCS in October 2013 and was promoted to Inspector in 2022. He leaves behind a wife and two children.

In his inaugural address, Aina acknowledged the foundation laid by his predecessor—who is widely credited with modernizing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)—and vowed to expand on those achievements. Emphasizing a strong stance against malpractice, he warned wrongdoers that their illicit activities have no place at JAMB, promising to ramp up modern technological investments and deepen partnerships with security agencies to safeguard the integrity of the admissions process.
