Reports indicate that 85 houses have been inundated, with property losses reaching into the millions of naira following a two-day torrential downpour. The flood has ravaged significant portions of the local government area.
Some affected residents have attributed the flooding to water runoff from Orere Rock, collapsed bridges, and the careless dumping of refuse into drainage systems. Priscilla Osiobafoh, Executive Director of BraveHeart Initiative, expressed her dismay, noting that approximately 85 houses were impacted, with 50 of them being severely damaged.
Osiobafoh explained, “The flood began around 10 am on Monday. After assessing the damage, I found that 85 buildings were affected, with major destruction seen in 50 of them. The flooding was caused by excessive water from Orere Rock, collapsed bridges, and blocked drainage systems.”
She emphasized that these issues highlight the broader impacts of climate change and environmental neglect, suggesting the need for a comprehensive drainage system to manage runoff from the rocks.
Osiobafoh criticized the government for blaming residents for refuse in drainages while ignoring the collapse of vital infrastructure like bridges. “The bridges were faulty, and the water overflowed, exacerbating the damage,” she said.
Other victims, including Feyintola Eshamah and Stella Agbarajo, lamented the loss of their properties and the impact on their lives. “The flood has left us homeless and destroyed all our belongings,” Agbarajo reported, relieved that there were no casualties.
Mrs. Edith Igboje has called for urgent assistance from federal, state, and local governments.
In response, Council Chairman Tajudeen Alade stated that the council has reported the incident to the state government and informed the Nigerian Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to seek aid for the victims. Alade acknowledged the role of poor sanitation, illegal construction, and refuse dumping in exacerbating the flooding but emphasized ongoing efforts to address the situation.
