The state experienced heavy rains and thunderstorms, accompanied by frequent lightning strikes, over the past 24 hours, impacting seven districts.

“Within the last day, lightning caused two fatalities in Siwan and one each in Supaul and Rohtas districts,” the Chief Minister’s office reported.

Most of the casualties occurred when lightning struck individuals working in fields or seeking shelter under trees during the storms.

Bihar’s Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, has expressed condolences to the affected families and announced financial assistance. “The Chief Minister has approved an ex-gratia payment of INR 400,000 (approximately $4,788) for the families of the deceased,” a government spokesperson stated.

Kumar has urged residents to stay cautious during adverse weather conditions and adhere to disaster management guidelines, including staying indoors during thunderstorms.

Earlier this week, lightning strikes resulted in the deaths of 12 people in Bihar. Over the past two weeks, more than 40 people have lost their lives to lightning in the state.
