EEDC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh, revealed this in a statement on Thursday in Enugu.
Okeke, who specializes in replacing original meter sensors with fake ones, was bypassing the meters to prevent them from recording actual consumption, thereby negatively impacting the company’s revenue.
According to Ezeh, the Meter Monitoring Team was dispatched for a routine inspection following a whistle-blower’s report. During the inspection at a premises on Bida Road, Onitsha, they discovered a bypassed meter with the original sensor replaced by a fake one. The customer admitted to the tampering and identified Okeke, a former EEDC employee, as the perpetrator.
Okeke was tracked, arrested, and handed over to the Central Police Station in Onitsha, where he is currently assisting with the investigation. Ezeh noted that Okeke, from Adogba Village in Awgu Local Government Area, Enugu State, was dismissed from EEDC in December 2020 for gross misconduct.
“This apprehension is a significant breakthrough in our fight against meter bypass and energy theft,” Ezeh said. “We believe further investigation will uncover more wrongdoings by individuals like Okeke in our network.”
Ezeh cautioned customers against engaging in meter bypass, warning that the company has intensified its monitoring activities and anyone caught will face legal consequences. He also advised customers to be wary of individuals posing as EEDC staff, as some ex-employees continue to extort customers and conduct illegal activities.
“Customers should verify the identity of anyone claiming to be EEDC staff to avoid falling victim to illegal activities,” Ezeh warned.
Ezeh commended the whistle-blower and encouraged others to report any suspected cases of meter bypass and energy theft.
