In an interview with journalists in Abuja after receiving a fellowship award from the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Maku lamented the rampant political violence in the North, warning that framing politics as a “North vs South” issue creates substantial problems for the nation.
Maku urged Northern state governors to prioritize addressing insecurity, which he highlighted as a major obstacle to progress in the region.
Expressing his concern, Maku stated, “Governors in the North must stop this violence of terror and banditry, which has crippled Nigeria. When people can’t go to their farms, food production declines, and the cost of living rises. If I were a governor in the North today, my primary responsibility would be to ensure peace in my state.”
He emphasized that the pervasive political violence in the North needs to be tackled by the governors, as even federal intervention would be ineffective without local efforts. Maku remarked, “There is too much politics of violence in the North. Until the governors take action, no miracle can be performed, even by the federal government. Once you live in a nation divided by ‘we vs them,’ ‘North vs South,’ ‘Christianity vs Islam,’ you foster malice.”
Maku called for improved national unity and better leadership, stating, “We need to improve the way we view life. Leadership has the responsibility of uniting people. If we, the leaders, unite the nation through our policies, there will be peace and unity.”
He also addressed the economic challenges, urging the current administration to manage the economy effectively to provide relief to the populace. “The President should pay special attention to monetary policies. If the value of the Naira continues to drop, no one will be able to produce. Whatever you want to do in this nation requires importing machinery. If the value of the Naira falls, it will affect many companies that are already leaving Nigeria,” Maku added.
