Speaking to journalists during the 4th edition of a mini-table tennis tournament organized by the Offiong Edem Foundation for children from the South South and South East regions of Nigeria, Edem expressed disappointment with the state government. She noted that, despite her efforts and investments in promoting the sport locally, her achievements have gone unrecognized.
Edem highlighted her recent visit to the state Deputy Governor, Peter Odey, to discuss the mini tournament. She lamented that the state government has yet to acknowledge her accomplishments or support her training sessions for various tennis championships.
“The commissioner for sports attended the opening ceremony yesterday to welcome the children, but I am disheartened that my state government has yet to notice or appreciate my efforts,” Edem said. “There has been no recognition or support for my qualifying for the Olympics for the fifth time.”
Otuekong Orok Duke, Chairman of Canaan Club of Calabar and Cross River’s representative on the NDDC board, praised Edem for her international achievements. “We are immensely proud of Offiong’s many accolades, including her recent success at the African Club Championship in Benghazi, Libya, where we won the Silver trophy,” Duke said.
Ama-Ebi Ebikpolade, Chairman of the Table Tennis Association in the South South, added that Offiong’s achievements have made her a role model in the region.

Elaborating on his economic perspective, Omokri emphasized that poverty must always be evaluated relative to each nation’s unique economic realities and localized cost of living. He contrasted the Nigerian situation with the United States, pointing out that while ₦3,000 can cover daily requirements locally, attempting to live on an equivalent nominal value in the U.S. would constitute extreme poverty, underscoring his stance that contextual evaluation is vital.
Furthermore, the ambassador-designate critiqued the rigid application of the World Bank’s global poverty threshold—specifically the standard benchmark of living on less than $2 a day—arguing that international metrics fail to accurately reflect ground-level economic conditions in Nigeria unless adjusted for local purchasing power and actual domestic expenditures.
