Rivers State Plans Alternate Offices As Police Bar Caretaker Chairmen

Writing by Sediq Mutari....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Following the police’s closure of local government council headquarters, Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, revealed plans for the 23 local government councils to operate from alternative secretariats.

This decision was announced shortly after the swearing-in of the 23 local government caretaker committee chairmen on Wednesday.

The move comes after tensions escalated, leading to police taking control of all local government headquarters on Tuesday.

The state police command stated that this action was necessary “to prevent further violence and maintain law and order.”

Police patrol vans barricaded the headquarters, manned by armed officers, preventing the newly inaugurated caretaker chairmen from accessing their offices.

Rivers State has experienced heightened conflict over the past year, fueled by a longstanding feud between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

This feud has resulted in several violent incidents, including a clash on Tuesday in Eberi-Omuma, Omuma Local Government Area, which led to the deaths of a policeman and a member of a local security outfit.

The crisis has also had legislative consequences, with the state House of Assembly being bombed last year and becoming factionalized amidst attempts to impeach Governor Fubara.

Opponents of the governor in the assembly, led by Martin Amaewhule and loyal to Minister Wike, enacted the Local Government Amendment Law 2024.

This law allows the 23 chairmen to extend their tenure by six months, citing Governor Fubara’s failure to hold timely local government elections.

Governor Fubara, addressing the operational challenges posed by the police’s actions, stated that the local government councils could function from any suitable location, ensuring governance continues despite the obstacles.

Political Realignment? Obi And Kwankwaso Supporters Converge In Abuja.

Supporters of former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, are scheduled to hold a unity summit in Abuja today.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The event, themed “One Voice, One Vision: In Unity We Win,” is being organised by the OK Movement, a group advocating for a possible Obi–Kwankwaso political partnership ahead of the 2027 general elections.

A flyer shared on by the group on Friday indicated that eight speakers will feature at the summit.

The lineup includes New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) chieftain Buba Galadima, activist Aisha Yesufu, and Isaac Fayose, brother of former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose.

Others billed to speak are Moses Paul, a former African Democratic Congress (ADC) chairmanship candidate, and Adebayo Adefolaseye, the South-West coordinator of the OK Movement.

As of report time, about 428 participants had reportedly registered to attend the gathering.

The summit comes amid rising political speculation that Obi and Kwankwaso may be considering a move from the ADC to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

On Friday night, Kwankwasiyya movement spokesperson Habibu Mohammed stated that both politicians were expected to conclude arrangements for the defection next week.

He said the decision followed unanimous approval by key stakeholders and added that discussions with the NDC were approximately 90 percent complete, with only minor details remaining.

According to him, the two politicians, along with other associates, could formally join the NDC as early as Monday or Tuesday.

“I believe him, Peter Obi, and some others will be joining the NDC,” Mohammed said.

The ongoing leadership crisis within the ADC has been linked to the reported political realignment.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court set aside an earlier order maintaining the status quo in the ADC leadership dispute and referred the case back to the Federal High Court for further hearing, effectively prolonging the uncertainty.

The OK Movement was originally launched in April by supporters of Obi and Kwankwaso to rally backing for a joint 2027 presidential ticket.

Fresh Political Rift As Amaechi Snubs Obi Camp, Vows Silence On Abuse Claims.

Former Minister of Transportation and a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rotimi Amaechi, has stated that his supporters have been instructed to avoid social media confrontations ahead of the party’s presidential primary.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Amaechi made the remarks during the ADC Progressive Movement meeting in Lagos, where he addressed ongoing online exchanges allegedly involving supporters of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

He explained that his followers have deliberately stayed away from online altercations based on his directive aimed at promoting peace and unity within the party.

Amaechi said, “My supporters don’t engage in fights on social media. My people don’t fight. Have you seen any Amaechi person fighting on social media? It is between Atiku people and Obi people, and Obi people abusing me, we will never reply.”

He added that the decision was not due to inability to respond but a conscious effort to prevent unnecessary division within the party.

“It’s not because we don’t know English or we can’t reply. The reason why we don’t reply is that we always want peace,” he said.

The former Rivers State governor also questioned the firm stance of some supporters who insist that the ADC presidential ticket must go to their preferred candidates.

He said, “The Obidients insist ‘Obi or nothing.’ Do they have the numbers? That’s the question. The Atiku people say ‘Atiku or nothing.’ Do they have the numbers?”

Amaechi stressed the importance of caution in political communication, noting that reconciliation after party primaries is often necessary.

Expressing confidence in his chances, he said his camp believes it will secure the ADC presidential ticket, which is why his supporters have avoided engaging in insults or online battles.

He said, “There are things to say when you win. It becomes difficult to bring everybody together, so because we know we will win, we’re not abusing anybody. So we can bring everybody together.

“So that question should not be asked to me because I am not abusing anybody. I am careful what I say, my team is under permanent instructions, don’t abuse anybody in ADC.”
