In a statement issued on Saturday, June 15, Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, revealed that this decision is part of a broader reorganization initiative within the public procurement system aimed at repositioning the agency for enhanced efficiency and transparency.

The Presidential spokesperson stated that Ahmadu is to transfer his responsibilities to the most senior officer in the Bureau until the appointment of a new Director-General.

Ngelale expressed the President’s gratitude to Ahmadu for his service and wished him well in his future endeavors.

The reason behind the President’s directive remains unclear.

In a separate announcement, Ngelale disclosed the appointment of Ayodeji Ariyo Gbeleyi as the new Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE). Gbeleyi is described as a distinguished financial expert and award-winning chartered accountant.

According to Ngelale, Gbeleyi is a fellow of both the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria. He has also participated in executive programs at prestigious institutions such as the London Business School, Harvard Kennedy School of Government, and Lagos Business School.

With over 30 years of post-qualification experience across various sectors, including manufacturing, fast-moving consumer goods, investment and commercial banking, project finance, telecommunications, infrastructure, and public administration, Gbeleyi brings a wealth of expertise to his new role.

The statement further highlighted Gbeleyi’s past positions as the Board Chairman of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria and Commissioner of Finance in Lagos State from 2013 to 2015.

President Tinubu expects Gbeleyi to leverage his extensive experience and competence to enhance the Bureau’s role as a national resource center for capacity building and sustaining reforms. This includes promoting a competitive private sector-driven economy, ensuring social accountability and efficient deployment of public resources, and advancing effective corporate governance and fiduciary discipline in both the public and private sectors.

Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Policy Communications, has suggested that some Nigerians staying in the country may be in a better financial situation than those who have relocated abroad. • Many Nigerians who left with hopes for better opportunities are currently struggling, despite holding university degrees and earning in foreign currencies.

    • Due to labour market realities, many graduates abroad are working in roles outside their fields of study, such as in warehouses or care facilities.

    • Although migrants may earn thousands of pounds monthly, a significant portion of their income is consumed by essential costs like rent, bills, food, and transportation.

    • Because their earnings are often insufficient to cover these living expenses, many are forced to work multiple jobs just to survive.

    • Bwala noted that the pressure of living abroad often leaves migrants with little disposable income and no safety net, whereas those earning lower incomes in Nigeria can often rely on support from friends and family.

    • Bwala described this experience for many as “modern-day slavery,” arguing that those in Nigeria who believe they are suffering are often better off than those who left five years ago.
