Cholera Outbreak: Children Under Five At Risk, Warns UNICEThe United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has expressed concern over the heightened vulnerability of children under the age of five to severe dehydration and increased mortality rates during cholera outbreaks.

In a statement issued by the Chief of UNICEF Lagos Field Office, Celine Lafoucrier, on Saturday, it was emphasized that addressing the challenges posed by cholera outbreaks necessitates a concerted effort by state policies to ensure the provision of high-quality water and sanitation facilities, along with strengthened healthcare systems capable of responding effectively during outbreaks.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Lafoucrier stressed the importance of state-led educational campaigns on cholera prevention to safeguard children and the broader population.

“Recurrent cholera outbreaks pose significant health risks to children and the general population. Among the most vulnerable are children under five, who are susceptible to severe dehydration and elevated mortality rates.

“Furthermore, cholera outbreaks often disrupt education, leading to school closures and reduced attendance as families tend to the needs of sick relatives. This disruption can impede children’s learning and development. Additionally, post-recovery complications in children, such as malnutrition, stunted growth, and weakened immune systems, heighten the risk of contracting other diseases,” she remarked.
