Group Expresses Shock Over 27 Defected Lawmakers Still Considered PDP MembersThe Domestic Transparency Watch has called on the Rivers State government to reject the state high court’s ruling, which reinstated 27 lawmakers of the State House of Assembly led by Martins Amaewhule.

The group urged the state government to stand against any form of legislative misconduct being planned by the former members of the state House of Assembly. In a statement by its president, Adam Biu, the group argued that the lawmakers’ defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) violated Section 109(1)(g) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Biu expressed disbelief that despite Martins Amaewhule and 25 other lawmakers presenting their defection letter on the floor of the Rivers State House of Assembly on December 18, 2023, the judge ruled that they remain PDP members and, thus, members of the House of Assembly.

Biu urged Governor Siminalayi Fubara to reject and contest the court’s ruling for the benefit of the people of Rivers State. The group also called on the National Judicial Council (NJC) to investigate the judgment that reinstated the former lawmakers.

The statement read in part:

“The Domestic Transparency Watch is deeply concerned by the level of legislative misconduct being considered by the former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. We are particularly dismayed by the recent ruling of the Rivers State High Court, which reinstated the dismissed lawmakers despite clear evidence of their defection.

“The actions taken by the 26 lawmakers led by Martin Amaewhule and their supporters to obtain this ruling are not only a blatant display of political misconduct but also a deliberate attempt to disrupt the state by undermining the law.

“Section 109(1)(g) and (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, explicitly states the rules regarding defection in parliament and its consequences. The former members were fully aware of these provisions. The judgment that the defected members are still part of the Rivers State House of Assembly and members of the PDP is shocking.

“We urge the Rivers State government not to tolerate the unethical behaviour planned by the dismissed lawmakers. The state government must outrightly reject and challenge the ruling in the best interest of the people of Rivers State.

“We also support the calls made by various groups and civil society organisations for the NJC to investigate the judgment of the Rivers State High Court, which reinstated the former members of the state House of Assembly.

“We have faith that the people of Rivers State will receive the justice they rightfully deserve. Regardless of who is promoting and endorsing it, the illegality of this form of behaviour should not be tolerated.”

In a significant blow to drug trafficking, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted over 1.5 million Tramadol pills concealed in two trucks entering Nigeria via the Benin Republic border.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to a statement released on Sunday by the Director of Media & Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, this latest seizure follows a similar operation just a week prior in Lagos, where officers discovered 558,900 pills of 250mg Tramadol hidden in a sophisticated false-bottom compartment of an incoming truck.

Acting on credible intelligence, NDLEA operatives identified and intercepted the two additional trucks, which were utilizing an identical method of concealment and the same smuggling route—traveling from Togo through the Benin Republic into Nigeria. The statement highlights that the volume of pills in this latest interception is nearly three times that of the previous week’s seizure, with the cargo believed to be destined for delivery in the North.

Babafemi emphasized the strategic importance of this bust, noting that as maritime port security has tightened, criminal cartels are increasingly attempting to use land borders. By blocking these escape routes, the NDLEA is successfully disrupting major supply lines intended for bandits and other criminal gangs. He characterized the operation as a major victory for public health, national security, and the protection of Nigerian youth.
