Malawi VP Saulos Chilima Among 10 Killed In Tragic Plane Crash

President Chakwera announced, “The search and rescue team have found the aircraft… completely destroyed with no survivors, as all passengers on board were killed on impact,” describing the incident as a “terrible tragedy.”
Photos shared by a member of the military rescue team showed army personnel amidst debris bearing the registration number of the Malawi Army Air Wing Dornier 228-202K aircraft.
Rescuers had been searching a fog-covered forest south of Mzuzu, where the last transmission from the plane was received before it vanished.
General Paul Valentino Phiri, the army commander, revealed that neighboring countries and international allies had assisted in the search efforts, providing helicopters and drones.
The group, which departed from Lilongwe to attend a funeral in Mzuzu, included Malawi’s former first lady Shanil Dzimbiri.
Chakwera expressed profound grief, noting that he had previously flown on the same aircraft for similar trips. Despite the aircraft’s history and the crew’s experience, he lamented the tragic turn of events.
Vice President Chilima, first elected in 2014, was widely respected in Malawi, particularly among young people. Despite facing challenges, including legal issues, Chilima was acknowledged for his dedication to serving the nation.
President Chakwera concluded, “Chilima was a good man, a devoted father and husband, a patriotic citizen who served his country with distinction and a formidable vice president. I consider it one of the greatest honors of my life to have had him as my deputy and counselor for the past four years.”
