EFCC Witness Testifies: 2022 Redesigned Naira Currency Printed In NigeriaAhmed Halilu, a witness of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), informed a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja that the redesigned Nigerian currency executed in 2022 was printed in Nigeria by the Nigeria Security Printing and Minting Company (NSPM).

Halilu, the Managing Director of the Company, testified before Justice Maryanna Anenih, revealing that the printing was done at the request of former President Muhammadu Buhari, with formal approval granted on October 6th, 2022.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Led in evidence by the EFCC’s lead counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo SAN, Halilu recounted how he was approached by the former Governor of the Central Bank, Godwin Emefiele, who indicated that the Presidency had approved the local printing of the currency.

He explained to the court that upon reviewing the approved samples, it was found that their machines lacked the capacity to handle the presidential order. Subsequently, he suggested contacting the UK-based company Delarue, the original designer of Nigeria’s currency, for amendments.

Delarue submitted two options in response, which Halilu presented to the CBN for consideration and approval. The witness clarified that the QR code was not present in Delarue’s suggested design, and the numbering system was adjusted for smooth local production.

Halilu disclosed that Delarue was paid £205,000 by the CBN for the consultancy services rendered.

During cross-examination by Emefiele’s lawyer, Mahmoud Magaji SAN, Halilu stated that the cost of producing the redesigned currency was identical to the cost of the old one. He acknowledged that apart from the removal of the QR code, there were no significant changes between the samples approved by Buhari and the printed version.

He affirmed that the printed currency was officially launched by former President Buhari and has since remained legal tender.

The trial proceedings have been adjourned to September 19, 2024, for further proceedings.
