Labour Unions Prepare For Action As Government’s Grace Period Ends Tomorrow The Organized Labour has firmly rejected proposals of ₦62,000 or ₦100,000 as minimum wage, labeling them “starvation wages” for Nigerian workers. Naija News reports that during the last meeting of the Tripartite Committee on Minimum Wage, Labour reiterated its demand for a ₦250,000 living wage for the average Nigerian worker.

Chris Onyeka, Assistant General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), emphasized this stance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief show on Monday. Onyeka reminded the public that the one-week grace period granted to the Federal Government on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, will end at midnight on Tuesday, June 11, 2024.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

“If the Federal Government and National Assembly do not meet our demands by tomorrow, the NLC and TUC organs will convene to decide on resuming the nationwide industrial action suspended last week,” Onyeka warned.

“We have never considered accepting ₦62,000 or any wage below what is necessary for Nigerian workers. We will not negotiate a starvation wage. Our demand remains at ₦250,000, which we believe is a fair concession considering the current market realities,” Onyeka stated, citing the cost of essential goods like rice, yam, and garri.

He urged the Federal Government and National Assembly to address their demands promptly, proposing that the government send an Executive Bill to the National Assembly to establish a National Minimum Wage Act that aligns with their demand.

“If we do not receive a tangible response from the government by the end of the grace period tomorrow, the organs of Organized Labour will meet to determine our next steps,” Onyeka clarified.

When asked about the Labour’s response if the government insists on a ₦62,000 wage, Onyeka asserted, “Our stance is clear. We have paused the nationwide indefinite strike, but if our demands are not met, we will resume the strike action as previously planned.”

Labour’s unwavering position highlights the growing tension as the grace period deadline approaches, leaving the ball in the government’s court to prevent further industrial action.

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The family later confirmed the tragedy after a senior military officer contacted them around 6:30 am, informing them that the base had come under attack and that the Brigade Commander was among those killed.

The relative described the incident as devastating, noting that communication had broken down during the assault.

The late General was later buried alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, Borno State.

He wrote, “Chiemeka Chibuzor’s wedding is hereby suspended. More than a thousand applications. No more wedding pending further directive from me.”

The cleric had earlier this week publicly invited proposals for her marriage, setting conditions that included the suitor being young and in good physical and mental health, alongside promised financial support and housing benefits.

The development follows a similar arrangement recently conducted by the church involving a non-verbal autistic man who was married in a ceremony organised by the ministry.
