Fuel Price Increase: Barbers Embrace Rechargeable, Solar Hair Clippers The removal of fuel subsidies has significantly impacted businesses across Nigeria, especially those reliant on electricity and fuel. Barbers, in particular, have felt the brunt of these changes due to increased fuel prices, high rent costs, rising electricity tariffs, and inconsistent power supply.

Despite these challenges, barbers are finding innovative solutions to mitigate their difficulties. Many have turned to rechargeable and solar-powered hair clippers to reduce costs.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Rising Costs and Survival Tactics

Mr. Andrew Olohunwa, a barber, explained, “Barbers are in a difficult situation today due to government policies that have negatively affected the masses. Our problems began in May 2023 when fuel subsidies were removed. Many had to close their businesses, while others increased prices or switched to gas-powered generators. Now, with a second fuel price hike within a year, people are struggling with food costs, rising electricity bills, and poor power supply.”

Embracing New Technologies

Mr. Olohunwa added, “In response, we have adopted solar-powered and rechargeable hair clippers. These tools save on fuel costs, which barely last three to four hours. It has helped cut down expenses, though it hasn’t increased patronage as many people now cut their hair at home.”

Mr. Sunday Elegha, another barber, shared his experience: “Managing the increased fuel price and electricity tariff has been tough. My shop’s electricity bill is at least N5,000 per month, but the supply is unreliable. Fuel price hikes forced us to raise haircut prices from N1,000 to N1,500, pushing some customers to use blades or shaving sticks at home. However, rechargeable clippers have helped reduce costs significantly.”

Mobile Barbers

The use of rechargeable and solar-powered clippers has also spread to mobile barbers. Mr. Adamu Dauda, a hawking barber, said, “I used to use a blade for my services until a customer introduced me to rechargeable clippers. I learned to use them by watching barbers in shops and applying my skills. It has been a beneficial change.”

Cost of Rechargeable Clippers

A visit to an electronics shop revealed that rechargeable hair clippers cost between N4,500 to N10,000, depending on the brand and wattage.

Economic Impact

The National Bureau of Statistics reported that the average retail price of petrol in April 2024 was N701.24, a 176.02 percent increase from April 2023’s N254.06. Additionally, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) announced a hike in electricity tariffs for Band A customers to N225 per kilowatt-hour, up from N68/kWh, marking a 240 percent increase.

Despite these economic challenges, barbers continue to adapt, demonstrating resilience and ingenuity in the face of adversity.

MOHBAD TRAGEDY SHOCKER: Court Ruthlessly Throws Out Suit Demanding Fresh Probe Into Late Singer’s Death!L

Published

The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a lawsuit seeking to compel the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to reopen investigations into the death of late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Justice James Omotosho dismissed the case in a judgment delivered on Thursday, ruling that the organisation that filed the suit lacked the legal standing to bring the action.

Key Highlights of the Ruling:

  • The Applicant: The case was brought against the Inspector-General of Police, the NPF, and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police by the Registered Trustees of Break the Silence Foundation, which sought an order for a fresh investigation.

  • Lack of Evidence: Justice Omotosho stated that the foundation failed to provide the court with the report from the initial police investigation, making it impossible to establish if the police neglected to question specific individuals.

  • Speculative Claims: The judge ruled that the court cannot rely on speculation or unproven claims when deciding whether to grant an applicant’s reliefs, noting that the claims lacked sufficient evidence.

  • Warning to Legal Practitioners: Justice Omotosho criticized lawyers who grant media interviews or make social media posts regarding active court cases, warning that such actions risk affecting public perception and could invite contempt powers.

  • Final Verdict: The court ultimately threw out the suit because the applicant lacked legal standing and failed to support its claims with adequate evidence. Mohbad had previously passed away in Lagos on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27.

PRISONER OF CONSCIENCE: Peter Obi And Dele Momodu Demand Immediate Release Of Detained El-Rufai!

Published

on

Prominent political figures Peter Obi (Presidential Candidate, Nigeria Democratic Congress – NDC) and Dele Momodu (Chieftain, African Democratic Congress – ADC) have renewed their demands for the release of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who has been in custody since February.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Peter Obi’s Position

Idris Zekeri, media aide to former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, stated that Obi has consistently advocated for due process regarding any allegations against El-Rufai. Speaking with Saturday Punch, Zekeri emphasized that if there is a case against the former governor, it should be properly established in court rather than resorting to extended, unlawful detention.

“Peter Obi has been one of the most vocal since the issue of El-Rufai’s ordeal started. We strongly believe that no Nigerian should be suffering extended detention without a charge and without his rights being respected,” Zekeri said.

El-Rufai remains in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) amidst ongoing investigations and court proceedings. The Federal High Court in Abuja has reserved judgment for October 26 on a no-case submission in a separate matter involving El-Rufai, while a fundamental rights suit regarding his detention is scheduled for hearing on October 27.

Dele Momodu’s Position

Dele Momodu, speaking on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, criticized the continued detention, arguing that El-Rufai’s critical role in the emergence of President Bola Tinubu’s administration should be acknowledged.

“Without former President Muhammad Buhari, Aisha Buhari, and Nasir El-Rufai, I am not sure President Tinubu will be in office today,” Momodu asserted.

Momodu further defended El-Rufai against allegations of divisive politics, suggesting that these criticisms are politically motivated. He described El-Rufai as a formidable political figure in the North-West, whose current predicament stems from falling out of favor with the government.

“He has become a prisoner of conscience. I have no doubt in my mind that if he were still in the good book of the government, he would not go through this ordeal,” Momodu concluded.
