Mixed Reactions To Nigeria’s New National Anthem

The introduction of a new National Anthem last Wednesday has sparked varied reactions among Nigerians, both offline and online. While some believe the new anthem is an improvement over its predecessor, others argue that it offers little difference and question the timing of its introduction amid pressing national challenges……CONTINUE READING....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Public Opinion

Gbenga Okesode, a businessman, criticized the timing of the new anthem’s introduction, describing it as a distraction from more critical issues like the rising cost of living and widespread insecurity. He questioned the government’s priorities, emphasizing that an anthem does not address the daily struggles of Nigerians.

“To me, even if the new anthem is far better than the one it replaced, the question is, is this time auspicious to introduce it? It shows that we are not serious and we are getting our priorities wrong,” Okesode stated.

Rasaq Akinleye, a lawyer, however, defended the new anthem, arguing that it followed due legislative process and must be respected regardless of personal opinions. He urged citizens to show respect for national symbols, including the anthem and pledge.

“No matter how you feel about it, it was introduced following the due process of the law. Showing disrespect when it is being sung is not the way to go,” Akinleye said.

Struggles with the New Anthem

At a recent press briefing at Lagos State University (LASU) for its 27th convocation ceremony, Vice Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello led the singing of the new anthem. While older attendees managed the first stanza, projectors were needed to help with the remaining stanzas, highlighting difficulties in transitioning to the new anthem.

School Experiences

Teachers and students have found it challenging to adapt. On the social media page of the Concerned Parents and Educators Network (CPE), teachers shared their experiences during morning assemblies:

  • Blessing Okere Ayanbiyi mentioned, “They (students) sang the old anthem since the new one is yet to be learnt.”
  • Olufunke Awoyemi noted, “To keep in view probably till next term.”
  • Princess Adepeju Olufadeke Sobaloju remarked, “We didn’t sing both old and new, the children were just laughing.”
  • Anthonia Oleabhiele added, “They managed to mutter it to the last stanza and then subconsciously said amen.”

Historical Context

The anthem reintroduced last Wednesday was originally in use from independence until 1978. The 1978 anthem, composed by Nigerians following a national competition, replaced it. The reintroduced anthem, however, was composed by colonialists, which adds another layer to the ongoing debate.

President Tinubu has directed that the National Pledge be recited in all official gatherings following the anthem, emphasizing the importance of national symbols.

Conclusion

As Nigerians continue to react to the new anthem, it is clear that while some embrace the change, others see it as a misplaced priority amidst more urgent national issues. The ongoing discourse reflects broader concerns about governance and national identity.

Ambassadorial Nomination Under Fire: Frank Tie Tie Exposes ‘Mistake’ Regarding Ex-FUOYE VC Fasina!.

Human rights lawyer Frank Tietie has criticized the nomination and subsequent confirmation of Professor Abayomi Fasina, the former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, as a non-career ambassador designate.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

  • Prior to his confirmation, a coalition of civil society organizations protested at the National Assembly on July 7, 2026, opposing Fasina’s nomination due to pending court cases involving allegations of sexual harassment, human rights violations, and victimization.

  • Despite these protests, the Nigerian Senate officially confirmed Fasina’s appointment as a non-career ambassador on Thursday.

Frank Tietie’s Position

  • During an interview on ARISE Television, Tietie argued that nominating an individual with such “baggage” was a mistake, emphasizing that ambassadors represent Nigeria in the same capacity as the President.

  • Tietie stated that the government should have sent the “right signals” by avoiding such controversial appointments, especially given the current state of governance.

  • He argued that even in the absence of a final court judgment, the allegations themselves have “tainted” Fasina’s reputation, and the Senate should have delayed the confirmation until the legal matters were resolved.

  • Tietie also suggested that the National Assembly’s decision overlooks significant social changes regarding how such allegations are now viewed by society.
