Workers under the Federal Workers Forum (FWF) have urgently appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to pay the three-month wage award and other arrears owed to them……CONTINUE READING

This appeal was made during an online meeting of the forum held on Saturday. A communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, signed by National Coordinator Comrade Andrew Emelieze, was shared with DAILY POST on Sunday.

The workers expressed frustration over the government’s disregard for their welfare. Emelieze highlighted the rising prices of goods and services, noting a 300% increase, coupled with the severe devaluation of the national currency, which has made survival increasingly difficult for federal workers.

He criticized the federal government for halting the payment of the N35,000 wage award since February and called on President Tinubu to address the issue immediately. Emelieze also urged that any state governor unable to provide a living wage should resign.

“We have observed that the Nigerian government is not taking workers seriously; the government doesn’t care about the welfare of its workers. We are really very disappointed in the government’s disposition towards workers.

“It appears the government is heartless and wicked. It is obvious the government is playing games with the new national minimum wage; this is truly very mindless and insensitive.

“Our national currency has been badly devalued. Federal workers now find it very difficult to feed and survive in Nigeria. Most unfortunately, the government has stopped the payment of the N35,000 wage award since February.

“It is shameful that the government now owes the federal workers three-month wage award. The government is also owing several arrears of allowances, promotion arrears, and several other payments to federal workers.

“We cannot continue suffering unnecessarily; we have endured this hardship enough. The federal government should pay up the three-month wage award and other arrears owed to federal workers.

“The federal government is not permitted to borrow any amount from our contributory pension fund. We are in total support of the indefinite national strike action called by labour. Federal workers should ensure full compliance and a complete shutdown of all federal government secretariats nationwide.

“If, after five working days from the commencement of the indefinite strike, and the government is not budging, labour should lead the workers to occupy the Three Arms Zone and state government houses nationwide. We call for solidarity and support from the Nigerian people.”

The communiqué concluded with a call for nationwide solidarity to support the indefinite strike action and ensure federal workers receive their rightful payments.

Paul Ibe, media aide to 2027 presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has criticized the federal government’s handling of the death of Mary Habila. He contends that the Nigerian police have a legal obligation to conduct a comprehensive criminal investigation and a Coroner’s inquest to determine the medical cause and circumstances surrounding her death.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Key Arguments

  • Government Responsibility: Ibe asserts that under Nigerian law, the government must treat any sudden, suspicious, or unnatural death as a crime against the state.

  • Investigative Obligation: He argues that the government’s duty to investigate such deaths cannot be blocked or halted by the deceased’s family.

  • Failure to Act: Ibe claims the government failed in its responsibilities regarding the death, which occurred at the Uburu residence of Works Minister David Umahi.

  • Forensic Concerns: He questioned the absence of a state-conducted autopsy, stating that without one, it is impossible to determine the cause of death or identify potential foul play, negligence, or torture.
