1978 Anthem Had Military Undertone – Bishop Opia
1978 Anthem Had Military Undertone – Bishop Opia....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Bishop Raymond Opia, a UK-based clergyman originally from Delta State, has argued that the 1978 National Anthem of Nigeria carried military undertones unsuitable for a democratic nation. In contrast, he praised the recently reinstated Independence-era National Anthem for its inclusive and brotherly message……CONTINUE READING
In an interview, Bishop Opia stated, “The music of the old anthem is better than the 1978 anthem, which has some military undertones because it was put to music by a military man.” He commended the National Assembly and President Bola Tinubu for their courageous decision to revert to the Independence-era anthem. He emphasized that the old anthem reflects the nation’s diversity and promotes a sense of brotherhood.
“The old anthem has lyrics or wordings which reflect the diversity of the nation and calls forth the ‘Brotherhood’ of the country as a people,” Bishop Opia remarked. He further noted that the anthem was written with the nation’s spiritual and physical freedom in mind, being introduced just after Nigeria’s independence.
Supporting the reintroduction of the Independence anthem were Professor David Irefin of Federal University Lokoja and lawyer Justice Osai Ahiakwo.
Professor Irefin highlighted the phrase “In brotherhood, we stand” as a unifying force for a country fragmented by division and hate. He criticized the former anthem for promoting segregation, discrimination, and other societal vices, asserting that the reintroduced anthem, inspired by God, embodies love, unity, and truth.
“Nigerians should wake up, and the spirit of love, truth, justice, equity, and greatness shall guide the various nationalities to success and sustainable development in oneness,” Irefin urged.
Justice Ahiakwo emphasized the philosophical and symbolic importance of the 1960 anthem, which marked Nigeria’s independence and liberation from British colonial rule. He praised the National Anthem Act 2024, signed by the President on May 29, 2024, as a reaffirmation of Nigeria’s liberation from neo-colonialism.
“Apart from whether Mr. President complied with Section 60 of the 1990 Constitution (as amended) to reinstate the old anthem ‘Nigeria we hail thee,’ it is rather ironic to hear some persons condemning this executive gesture,” Ahiakwo stated. He noted that the 1960 anthem’s emphasis on social and corporate responsibilities resonates deeply with Nigeria’s diverse and complex population.
