Allegations have surfaced that female travellers and traders on this route are being subjected to harassment, with some reportedly being dragged into the bush by security personnel and subjected to assault.
Mr. Timi Bomodi, the Area Controller of the Seme Customs command, expressed concern about these reports and revealed that the command has launched an investigation into the matter. They have also set up a complaint desk at the command to address the grievances of victims of such harassment and molestation.
While no official reports have been received directly by the Customs, the attention of the agency was drawn to these incidents by a visiting team from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Bomodi assured the public that the Customs takes these allegations seriously and condemns such acts. He emphasized that if such incidents are confirmed, the perpetrators, including any officers involved, will face appropriate consequences.
The establishment of a complaint desk by the command underscores its commitment to addressing the issue and providing support to victims. The Customs is determined to ensure the safety and security of travellers along the Lagos-Abidjan corridor.
In a related development, Bomodi also highlighted an increase in the movement of narcotics and dangerous drugs from Ghana. He revealed that a total of 1,254 parcels of Sativa Cannabis were intercepted within the first three months of this year, indicating a growing concern over drug trafficking activities in the region.
