Zabihullah Amiri, the head of the information and culture department, confirmed that rescue teams are tirelessly searching for the remaining victims after four bodies were recovered. Tragically, there are no reports of survivors from the affected family.
This latest flood exacerbates Afghanistan’s already dire humanitarian crisis, compounding the toll of multiple natural disasters in recent years. The World Food Programme (WFP) revealed that floods in the past few weeks have affected at least 80,000 people across the country.
The situation has been grim this month, with Afghan authorities reporting over 400 deaths due to flash floods across various provinces, with Baghlan province in the north bearing the brunt of the devastation.
Experts attribute the increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events in Afghanistan to the climate crisis. Despite having a negligible carbon footprint, the country remains among the top 10 climate-impacted nations globally.
Compounding the challenges, Afghanistan, scarred by decades of wars and conflicts, is ill-equipped to cope with the repercussions of climate change. Earlier this year, the country grappled with multiple earthquakes and severe flooding in March, further straining its already fragile infrastructure and resources.
As Afghanistan continues to battle the devastating consequences of climate change, urgent action and international support are crucial to mitigate further loss of life and alleviate the suffering of those affected by these relentless natural disasters.
