Torrential rain on Friday caused extensive damage to the building and its contents, including movable and immovable items such as parked vehicles, office furniture, and equipment, as well as voter enrollment machines configured for the CVR.

National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, confirmed the flooding in a press release on Saturday. He stated that the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner for Edo State, Dr. Anugbum Onuoha, reported the extensive damage caused by the heavy downpour.

Despite the setback, Olumekun assured that the CVR would proceed as scheduled, with additional machines being dispatched from neighboring states to make up for the shortfall. However, the State Headquarters in Benin City will no longer serve as a registration center. Instead, the registration exercise will take place at the INEC Ikpoba Okha LGA office located at 16 Customs Road, off Benin/Auchi Road, Benin City.

With the Edo State governorship election slated for September 21, 2024, INEC is taking proactive measures to ensure minimal disruptions to the voter registration process. The commission has alerted security agencies and emergency services to the situation and is committed to mitigating further disruptions.

As the CVR resumes on Monday, 27th November 2024, INEC remains focused on facilitating the participation of eligible voters in the electoral process, despite the challenges posed by natural disasters.
