According to the organization’s Country Director, Isa Sanusi, applying this label to the deceased is prejudicial, particularly since they are no longer alive to speak for themselves. The incident follows the deaths of detainees who were suspected of involvement in illegal gold mining.
In the wake of the tragedy, survivors have stepped forward to describe the harrowing conditions inside the detention facility. One survivor recounted that 17 individuals were initially packed into a small room before additional detainees were brought in. Despite complaints regarding the cramped space and stifling heat, they remained locked inside, with the survivor further alleging that an unidentified substance resembling perfume was sprayed into the room.
Appearing on Arise News, Sanusi revealed that findings from Amnesty International’s investigation point to severe overcrowding at the facility. He noted that the cell, built to hold a maximum of 10 people, was crammed with 67 detainees between Tuesday, September 15, and Wednesday, September 16, a period marked by intense heat in Minna.
Emphasizing the gravity of the situation, Sanusi stated that cramming 67 people into a space meant for only 10 constitutes a major human rights violation that must be addressed.
