Speaking to newsmen on Wednesday in Lagos, Mr. Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at NCAA, highlighted the ongoing mediation between the European carrier and aviation labor unions. The unions had picketed Turkish Airlines at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, leading to significant disruptions.
“President Bola Tinubu has directed the NCAA, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and relevant agencies to ensure that the rights of Nigerian passengers are protected at all times,” Achimugu stated. He warned that the NCAA would impose severe penalties if Turkish Airlines continued to fail in its obligations to Nigerian passengers, who were left stranded due to the airline’s failure to airlift them to Istanbul.
Over 300 passengers remain stranded as Turkish Airlines canceled flights into and out of Nigeria until Thursday. Despite the airline’s claims of communicating with passengers via email, many still turned up at Lagos Airport unaware of the cancellations.
Achimugu also mentioned a virtual meeting on Tuesday between NCAA Director-General Capt. Chris Najomo and Turkish Airlines’ Country Manager, during which the latter’s disrespectful behavior was noted. “The representative of the airline exhibited some traits of impudence, which the regulator deemed amounted to lack of regard for the system,” he said.
The NCAA’s investigation into the situation is ongoing. Achimugu assured that the Federal Government would take all necessary steps to ensure the protection of Nigerian passengers’ rights, including imposing sanctions if Turkish Airlines is found culpable.
“We will ensure that the rights of Nigerian passengers are not violated,” Achimugu reiterated. “At the end of our findings, if the airline is found culpable, we will invoke the relevant parts of our regulation Part 17, to mete out the right punishment.”
This incident underscores the Nigerian government’s commitment to holding airlines accountable and safeguarding the rights of its citizens in the face of international travel challenges.
