The Organized Labour, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), has reiterated its stance on the May 31 ultimatum set for the Federal Government to finalize the new national minimum wage fixing process…..CONTINUE READING
In a joint statement issued after an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja, Mr. Joe Ajaero, NLC President, and Mr. Festus Osifo, TUC President, emphasized the importance of reaching a fair and equitable agreement that reflects the true value of Nigerian workers’ contributions to the nation’s development.
The NEC acknowledged the efforts made in the negotiation process but stressed the urgency of addressing the current realities affecting Nigerian workers and the masses. It affirmed the commitment of organized labour to protect the interests and welfare of workers during the negotiation process.
Furthermore, the labour unions directed state councils to issue a joint two-week ultimatum to state governments that have not fully implemented the N30,000 national minimum wage and its consequential adjustments. This ultimatum aims to avert industrial action and ensure compliance with wage regulations.
Additionally, labour reaffirmed its demands for the immediate reversal of electricity tariff hikes and the revision of categorizations that contribute to the suffering of Nigerian workers and citizens. The National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the federal government were given a May 31 ultimatum to meet these demands.
Labour emphasized the non-negotiable nature of these demands and urged the government to prioritize their resolution for industrial peace. It called on affiliate unions, workers, and Civil Society Organizations across Nigeria to remain united and steadfast in solidarity during this critical period.
The statement underscores the determination of organized labour to uphold the rights and welfare of Nigerian workers and emphasizes the importance of government responsiveness to address pressing issues affecting the workforce and the general populace.

‘Not Appropriate’ For Iran To Attend 2026 World Cup, Donald Trump Says.
United States President Donald Trump has said Iran’s national football team could be “welcome” at the 2026 World Cup but warned that their participation may not be appropriate due to safety concerns.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The tournament, organised by FIFA, will take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico starting 11 June.
Trump made the remarks on Thursday, March 12, amid rising tensions following U.S. and Israeli military strikes in Iran that killed the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Tehran retaliated with missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and several Gulf states hosting American military bases, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.
“The Iran national soccer team is welcome to the World Cup, but I really don’t believe it is appropriate that they be there, for their own life and safety,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
The comments came shortly after Iran’s Sports and Youth Minister, Ahmad Donyamali, hinted that the team might withdraw from the tournament. Speaking to IRIB Sports Network on Tuesday, Donyamali said:
“Given that this corrupt government has assassinated our leader, under no circumstances do we have the appropriate conditions to participate in the World Cup. Our boys are not safe, and conditions for participation do not exist.”
Iran was scheduled to face New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles on 15 and 21 June, respectively, before playing Egypt in Seattle on 26 June.
Earlier this week, FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed that Trump had indicated Iran would still be “welcome to compete” at the World Cup.
If Iran ultimately withdraws from what would have been its fourth consecutive World Cup, FIFA regulations allow the governing body to select a replacement team. It remains unclear which nation could fill the spot.

FCCPC Investigates Five Airlines Over Alleged Christmas Price Fixing.
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has warned that it could take action against five domestic airlines for allegedly inflating ticket prices during the 2025 Christmas and New Year travel period.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The move comes after numerous complaints from travellers who paid far higher fares than usual during the festive season.
Tunji Bello, Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of the FCCPC, disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa on Thursday. He explained that the commission launched an investigation following reports of steep price increases on several domestic routes.
“Ticket prices that normally ranged between ₦45,000 and ₦50,000 suddenly surged to between ₦400,000 and ₦670,000 during the Christmas period,” Bello said. “Our investigation indicates there may have been a coordinated price-fixing mechanism.”
He added that the FCCPC is reviewing possible enforcement actions, including the option of requiring airlines to refund passengers who paid inflated fares.
An interim report released two weeks ago revealed that fares during the December 2025 peak travel period were significantly higher than those in January 2026, despite stable fuel costs, regulatory charges, and exchange rates. On some routes, the difference between peak and off-peak prices ranged from ₦405,000 to ₦650,000 per passenger.
Bello emphasized that while seasonal demand and operational factors can affect ticket pricing, the commission is examining whether these practices violated the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act on anti-competitive agreements and price fixing. “Consumer rights must be respected, as guaranteed under the FCCPA,” he stated.
FCCPC Also Reviewing Foreign Airlines
Bello noted that the commission is also assessing the pricing practices of foreign airlines operating into Nigeria. He said the FCCPC collaborates with other regulatory agencies, including NAFDAC, SON, NCC, and NERC, to enforce consumer protection and competition laws across sectors.
Louis Odion, FCCPC Executive Commissioner for Operations, clarified that the agency does not control prices directly. “We are not a price control body, but we ensure consumers are not exploited through unfair pricing practices,” he said, adding that monitoring across sectors would continue.
