OPL 245 Settlement Set to Boost Nigeria’s Oil Production by 150,000bpd.

The long-running dispute over Oil Prospecting Licence (OPL) 245 has finally been resolved.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu facilitated the agreement, which is expected to unlock major deepwater investments and boost Nigeria’s crude oil output by an estimated 150,000 barrels per day once operations resume. Currently, the country produces between 1.68 and 1.71 million barrels per day, with the President aiming for at least 2 million bpd.

The settlement, reached between the Federal Government, ENI, and Nigerian Agip Exploration Limited (NAEL), was concluded during a meeting chaired by President Tinubu in Abuja. Attendees included ENI CEO Claudio Descalzi, COO Guido Brusco, Head of Sub-Saharan Region Mario Bello, NAEL Managing Director Fabrizio Bolondi, and the President’s Special Adviser on Energy, Olu Arowolo-Verheijen.

According to the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the deal ends a 15-year dispute over ownership and development rights to the block, restoring clarity and stability to one of Nigeria’s most valuable offshore assets.

The agreement paves the way for a Final Investment Decision on the Zabazaba-Etan deepwater project, which is expected to add roughly 150,000 barrels per day to national production, create jobs, stimulate local industry, and increase government revenues.

President Tinubu described the settlement as a milestone in his administration’s economic reform agenda, signaling Nigeria’s commitment to resolving legacy disputes, strengthening investor confidence, and ensuring the country’s natural resources generate sustainable value.

The President’s Special Adviser on Energy, Arowolo-Verheijen, explained that the new agreement improves on the 2011 framework and aligns with reforms under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), balancing investor clarity with stronger benefits for the Nigerian Federation. She emphasized that the resolution removes a major legacy risk in the upstream oil sector and reinforces predictable regulation, transparent governance, and commercially viable investment frameworks.

The settlement is part of broader reforms launched since 2023 to make Nigeria a competitive destination for global energy investment. Analysts note that the OPL 245 dispute had long been a barrier to unlocking the block’s full potential, and the Zabazaba-Etan project is now poised to boost production, generate jobs, and attract fresh capital.

President Tinubu commended the institutions and stakeholders involved in reaching the settlement, including the Office of the Attorney General, Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), NNPC Limited, and ENI leadership. He stressed that responsible investment and transparent governance will remain central to managing Nigeria’s natural resources and enhancing long-term economic growth.
