In a move met with both scrutiny and praise, Justice Nyesom-Wike Eberechi Suzzette, wife of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, and Ariwoola Oluwakemi Victoria, daughter-in-law of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, have been recommended for elevation within the Nigerian judiciary………CONTINUE READING
The National Judicial Council (NJC) announced Justice Suzzette’s nomination for elevation to the Court of Appeal, a decision that sparked protests from various civil society organizations and individuals. Concurrently, Ariwoola Oluwakemi Victoria was nominated for appointment as a Judge of the High Court, Federal Capital Territory, under the supervision of her father-in-law, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.
However, amidst these appointments, the NJC also issued warnings and restrictions to certain judges. Inyang Edem Ekwo and Justice G. B. Brikins-Okolosi faced reprimands and bans on elevation for two to three years due to misconduct and failure to meet judicial standards.
Additionally, Justice Amina Shehu of Yobe State High Court was cautioned for procedural irregularities in issuing a Writ of Possession.
The NJC’s decisions reflect its rigorous assessment of judicial conduct and competence, with numerous petitions reviewed and dismissed for lack of merit or evidence.
Despite the controversies surrounding some appointments, the NJC recommended a total of 86 judicial officers for various positions, including the Court of Appeal, High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Sharia Courts of Appeal, and Customary Courts of Appeal across Nigerian states.
This comprehensive overhaul of the judiciary underscores the critical role of the NJC in maintaining integrity and excellence within Nigeria’s legal system. As the recommended candidates await final approval from the President and State Governors, the nation anticipates the continued pursuit of justice and fairness in its judicial processes.
