NLC And TUC Threaten To Shut Down Dams Over Electricity Tariff Hike
The organized labor in Niger State has issued a stern warning, threatening to shut down the hydropower dams in the state in response to the recent hike in electricity tariffs.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The threat was delivered during a protest held at the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) office, following directives from the national bodies of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
Addressing the demonstrators, Idrees Lafene, the Chairman of NLC in the state, emphasized the people’s right to access 24-hour power supply at affordable rates. He underscored that the dams belong to the people, emphasizing that if the authorities fail to address the issue, the labor unions would take decisive action.
“This Dam belongs to the people, that is why NLC and TUC have agreed that this would be the first warning step for the authorities to do the needful, otherwise, we will go to the Dam and shut it down,” Lafene declared.
This protest comes on the heels of recent actions by the NLC and TUC, which included picketing offices of electricity distribution companies to protest against tariff hikes amidst inconsistent power supply.
The labor unions’ threat to shut down dams reflects growing frustration over the impact of electricity tariff increases on consumers. As tensions escalate, authorities face mounting pressure to address the concerns of workers and consumers alike, ensuring fair and affordable access to electricity across the state.
