Future of Learning in Danger—NUC Demands Urgent Digital Infrastructure Boost for Universities”
The Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Mr. Chris Maiyaki, on Friday urged Nigerian universities and the government to significantly increase investment in digital infrastructure to drive the growth of digital learning.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Maiyaki noted that education should transcend the mere pursuit of certificates, stressing that digital learning transforms education into a tool for empowerment—producing citizens who are digitally literate, employable, and ready to contribute meaningfully to national development.
He emphasised that Open and Distance e-Learning (ODeL) is vital to Nigeria’s sustainable development, adding that digital education must be made inclusive and affordable to bridge the digital divide and ensure that no Nigerian is left behind.
“More importantly, the country must develop a functional digital education policy framework to maximise the full potential of e-learning,” Maiyaki said.
The NUC official made the call in his keynote address at the maiden convocation of the Centre for Open, Distance and e-Learning (BUCODeL) of Babcock University, Ilisan-Remo, where he spoke on the theme, “Digital Learning for Global Impact.”
According to him, digital technology has profoundly reshaped higher education globally, and Nigeria must not be left behind.
“For Nigeria to maintain momentum in digital learning, we must prioritise continuous investment in infrastructure and tools—broadband access, power supply, and necessary hardware,” he stated.
Maiyaki stressed that digital learning should be treated as a fundamental educational tool rather than a luxury confined to urban areas.
He further advocated regular capacity-building for academic and non-academic staff to equip them with the digital skills needed for effective online teaching and learner engagement.
He also called for stronger collaboration among universities, government agencies, the private sector, and international partners to create a cohesive and dynamic digital education ecosystem.
Congratulating the graduating students for their resilience and academic excellence, Maiyaki charged them to see themselves as “architects of Nigeria’s digital future.”
“As you graduate today, remember this is not the end of a journey but the beginning of a mission—to influence, innovate, and impact the world through what you have learned. Go forth as ambassadors of change in your communities and industries. Let your success prove that digital learning is a transformative path to excellence,” he said.
Maiyaki commended Babcock University for its visionary role in launching BUCODeL, describing the institution as a trailblazer in digital learning and a partner in shaping the future of global education.
In his remarks, Prof. Ademola Tayo, Vice-Chancellor of Babcock University, stressed that Africa’s future depends on educating not only the youth but also millions of adults outside formal schooling.
He noted that Open Distance Learning (ODL) provides the structure to scale education across urban and rural areas, accelerating human capital development.
Prof. Tayo explained that raising Nigeria’s literacy rate from about 62% to over 80% could spur industrialisation, improve productivity, and break the cycle of poverty—goals that ODL is critical to achieving.
“ODL enables learners across regional divides, particularly in rural and underserved communities, to access education flexibly, overcoming barriers of geography, time, and traditional class schedules,” he said.
He congratulated the graduands and urged them to deploy their skills in advancing sustainable development and positively impacting Nigeria and the wider world.
The Director of BUCODeL, Prof. Mobolanle Sotunsa, revealed that the distance learning programme, which started in 2021 with just 17 students, now has about 446 students across programmes like Accounting, Computer Science, and MBA.
She added that the centre is in the process of adding four new programmes—BSc Nursing, BSc Mass Communication, Master of Public Health (MPH), and Master of Education (MEd)—with accreditation expected before year-end.
