Tech Giants Consume 2,500 Times More Electricity Than Nigeria In 2022: Report

Tech Giants Consume 2,500 Times More Electricity Than Nigeria In 2022: ReportsBig tech companies like Alphabet (Google’s parent company), Amazon, and Microsoft consumed a staggering 90 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity in 2022. This amount is approximately 2,500 times greater than the 36 gigawatt-hours (GWh) generated by Nigeria in the same year, according to a recent report…......KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

A calculation by JPMorgan Chase reveals that the electricity consumption of these tech giants significantly surpassed Nigeria’s total power generation. This comparison highlights the vast energy demands of data centers and digital infrastructure compared to the limited and often unstable electricity supply in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country.

The data consumption figures predate the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, which began to surge in November 2022 with the launch of ChatGPT. The International Energy Agency (IEA) forecasts that by 2026, global data centers will consume over 800 TWh annually, doubling the amount used in 2022.

In response to growing AI workloads, tech companies have collectively invested $40 billion in data centers in early 2023 alone. For instance, Meta, despite not having a cloud business, plans to spend up to $40 billion this year on AI-related projects. Comparatively, Saudi Aramco, a leading oil company, is planning a $50 billion investment.

In contrast, Nigeria continues to struggle with an unreliable power supply. The Nigerian Bureau of Statistics reports less than 13 million electricity customers, and the national grid has experienced frequent collapses, with 46 recorded instances between 2017 and 2023. Aging infrastructure, vandalism, and underinvestment contribute to the country’s chronic power shortages, forcing reliance on backup generators for 40% of electricity consumption.

Despite an installed capacity of 13 GW, Nigeria’s average available capacity remains around 4.5 GW due to poor maintenance and liquidity issues. Recent gas shortages further exacerbated the situation, causing nationwide blackouts and reducing power generation to below 2,500 MW at times.

In a bid to improve the power sector’s liquidity, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission recently removed subsidies in certain areas, raising tariffs to N206 per kilowatt-hour. This move has sparked public protests, with many Nigerians arguing that the hike should be delayed until the power supply is stabilized.

Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu supports the tariff increase, claiming it attracts local and foreign investors back to the sector. He asserts that power generation has risen to 4,800 MW following the Zungeru hydropower plant’s commencement and aims to reach 6,000 MW by the end of 2024.

Globally, tech companies are pushing for clean energy sources. For instance, Microsoft plans to develop 10.5 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, in partnership with Brookfield, to meet its goal of 100% zero-carbon electricity by then.

The IEA predicts an increase in Nigeria’s renewable energy generation, with hydropower and solar PV expected to grow significantly over the next few years. However, the pace of this growth remains slow compared to the rapid advancements and investments seen in the tech sector’s energy initiatives.

Nigerians hope that the new Electricity Act 2023 will empower state governors to improve the country’s power generation capabilities, potentially addressing the long-standing issues of energy supply and reliability.
