71% Of Nigerians Lack Regular Internet Access, GSMA Report Reveals
A recent report by the Groupe Special Mobile Association (GSMA) has disclosed that a staggering 71% of Nigerians do not have regular access to mobile internet. The study, unveiled during an event in Abuja, highlights the significant digital connectivity gap in Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
“While 29 per cent of Nigerians are regularly using mobile internet, there remains untapped potential; 71 per cent are not accessing these services regularly. An improved policy environment has the potential to help the industry boost coverage and adoption, resulting in 15 million additional internet users by 2028. However, the sector faces challenges to infrastructure deployment,” the report stated.
This revelation comes amid ongoing discussions about potential tariff increases by Nigerian telecom operators, who are facing various operational challenges. The government, however, is advocating for alternative solutions rather than price hikes to address these issues.
The GSMA report highlights several obstacles impeding the expansion of telecom coverage in Nigeria. These include the cumbersome and expensive process of acquiring rights-of-way and a complex tax environment, which collectively hinder sustained investment in the sector.
Despite these challenges, the report remains optimistic, suggesting that Nigeria could gain 15 million new internet users by 2028 with the right policy adjustments. It stresses the importance of a comprehensive digital transformation of the Nigerian economy to achieve universal digital connectivity.
Key challenges outlined in the report include:
- Rights-of-Way Acquisition: The process is described as cumbersome and costly, deterring investment.
- Tax Environment: A complex and layered tax regime increases operational costs and stymies sustainable investments.
- Rising Operational Costs: Increasing fuel prices and governmental fees add financial pressure on telecom operators.
To address these issues, the GSMA report recommends several policy measures aimed at creating a more favorable economic and regulatory environment for the mobile industry. These measures include:
- Establishing a legal framework to protect critical national infrastructure.
- Simplifying the process for issuing rights-of-way.
- Reducing the tax burden on the telecom industry.
- Fostering a regulatory climate that encourages robust investment.
“Future policies should be geared towards reducing the cost and complexity of infrastructure rollout to encourage investment and boost the adoption of mobile broadband,” the report advised.
The report also highlights the broader economic benefits of such policy enhancements, noting that they would drive productivity gains across the economy and create millions of new jobs in Nigeria.
In summary, the GSMA report underscores the urgent need for improved policies to enhance digital connectivity in Nigeria, which could significantly boost economic growth and improve the quality of life for millions of Nigerians.
