Gunmen Attack Edo Community, Kill One, Set Properties Ablaze

According to Dailypost, the attackers left a note with demands on the chest of the deceased, addressed to Governor Godwin Obaseki and the Okomu Oil Company. These demands included a directorship position at Okomu Oil Palm Plc and a 25% share in the company. The gunmen emphasized that their conflict was specifically with the Okomu Oil Company and not with security personnel.
During the raid, Pa Gabriel Okorugbe, a respected community chief, sustained injuries from a machete attack and was hospitalized. The community, located near the Okomu oil palm plantation, faced severe disruptions as multiple vehicles and properties were set ablaze by the attackers.
Commissioner Adegboye stated that a team of security personnel has been dispatched to the community to restore order and address the security crisis. “We are already holding talks in partnership with sister security organizations and the Okomu Oil Palm Company to arrest the situation,” he said.
This incident follows a previous attack last week where three employees of the Okomu Oil Company were killed while working on the plantation, indicating a disturbing pattern of targeted violence in the area.
Local authorities and security forces are actively working to stabilize the situation and prevent further attacks, ensuring the safety and security of the community residents.

A Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has sentenced Sunmonu Olasunkanmi Thaoban to four years in prison for laundering ₦16 million by disguising its illegal origins and converting it into a 2018 black G-Wagon Jeep.

Guilty Plea & Sentencing: Justice Akintayo Aluko handed down the sentence on Thursday after Thaoban pleaded guilty to a two-count EFCC charge, alongside an alternative fine option of ₦1.8 million.

The Offense: Prosecutors stated that Thaoban acted as a middleman in 2023, funneling illicit funds to purchase the luxury vehicle, violating the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

Asset Forfeiture: In addition to the prison term, the judge ordered the permanent forfeiture of both the convict’s G-Wagon and mobile phone to the Federal Government.

In a separate proceeding, Justice Aluko also convicted four Bureau de Change (BDC) operators—Umar Muhammad Lamido, Yusuf Musa Yusuf, Abdulmuhimin Mahmud, and Muhammed Musa—for conducting unauthorized foreign exchange transactions outside the official market. Following their guilty pleas, each received a 12-month prison sentence with an option of a ₦100,000 fine.
A Delta State High Court has handed down death sentences to two individuals for their involvement in the 2018 killing of Delta State University (DELSU) undergraduate Elozino Ogege, following a ruling that found them guilty.
