ASUU Threatens Nationwide Strike Over Absence Of University Governing Councils

ASUU expressed frustration with the failure of the Federal Government to appoint governing councils, criticizing what it sees as the indifferent attitude of the President Bola Tinubu-led administration towards academic matters in Nigerian Federal Universities. The union also objected to recent salary increments of 35% for professors and 25% for other academics, considering them vulnerable to government withdrawal.
Speaking during an ongoing press briefing at the University of Abuja, ASUU President Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke emphasized that the union had given ample time for the Tinubu-led government to address the issue.
Osodeke highlighted concerns over the failure to appoint Governing Council members for Federal universities, describing the dissolution of the councils as illegal and against the established university principles.
The dissolution of the governing councils was initially announced by the National Universities Commission (NUC) on June 22, 2023, following a directive from President Tinubu. This directive encompassed the dissolution of boards across government parastatals, agencies, and companies.
