ASUU Criticizes Dissolution Of Federal Universities’ Governing Councils
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has expressed strong disapproval over President Bola Tinubu’s decision to dissolve the Governing Councils of Federal Universities. Speaking in Abuja during a workshop organized by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for Heads of Beneficiary Institutions, Osodeke highlighted the critical role of Governing Councils in university administration. He emphasized that no university worldwide operates without such a body for an extended period, as they are essential for managing university funds and ensuring proper governance.

Osodeke also urged TETFund to enforce accountability for universities that fail to utilize the Fund’s projects effectively. He stressed the importance of a thorough assessment of how TETFund allocations are being used, to ensure that the resources contribute to the intended improvements in educational infrastructure and services.

The workshop addressed various initiatives such as Career Service Centres, Teaching Practice, Beneficiary Identity Management Service (BIMS), and Hostel Development. Osodeke’s comments come in the wake of President Tinubu’s June 2023 decision to dissolve all federal universities’ governing councils, a move that has since caused administrative disruptions and crises within several institutions.
