APC Displaces PDP As Main Opposition In Abia

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is rapidly losing its foothold as the main opposition party in Abia State. A significant number of high-profile members have defected, with the party’s secretariat remaining locked for four months……..CONTINUE READING....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Recent Defections

In recent days, over 90 prominent PDP figures have left the party, with many joining the All Progressives Congress (APC) and others considering the ruling Labour Party (LP). Notable defections include:

  • Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji, the immediate past Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, now with the APC.
  • Chidiebube Uche Jasper, PDP’s Deputy Governorship candidate in the 2023 election.
  • Other key figures such as Ike Anyatonwu, Eugene Eze Job, Chima Agbaeze, and several others have also departed.

Earlier defections saw Professor Anthony Agbazuere, former Chief of Staff to ex-Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, and Eze Chikanmayo, a former Commissioner, joining the APC.

Impact on PDP

The exodus has shaken the PDP, which ruled Abia State for 22 years before the 2023 election loss to Governor Alex Otti of LP. This defeat has destabilized the party, driving many members to seek more stable political platforms, primarily the APC.

APC’s Position and Future Plans

The APC is positioning itself as a formidable opposition and a potential challenger in the 2027 elections. A coalition between existing APC members and new PDP defectors aims to strengthen the party’s presence and capabilities in Abia. According to an APC insider, the party is working towards becoming a major force in the state, denying claims that defectors are seeking protection from probes.

Chibuike Jonas, a former local government chairman, expressed confidence that the APC would take over the Abia State government house in 2027 and even suggested that Governor Alex Otti should return to the APC.

PDP’s Response

Despite the defections, the PDP remains optimistic about its future. Deputy Chairman and acting Publicity Secretary Abraham Amah described the mass exodus as a “self-cleansing exercise,” indicating that the party would emerge stronger. He also mentioned that new members are joining the PDP, and their names will be announced soon.

Governor Alex Otti’s Reaction

Governor Alex Otti, during his monthly media interaction, expressed no concern over the defections within the opposition parties. He assured the public that the LP remains intact, popular, and robust.

Conclusion

The political landscape in Abia State is undergoing significant changes, with the APC gaining momentum as the main opposition party. The PDP’s efforts to regroup and strengthen itself will be crucial in the coming months as both parties prepare for future electoral battles.
