Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, informed journalists about the delay, citing the need to make significant decisions. He stated, “There are a lot of far-reaching decisions being taken; we will continue tomorrow (Tuesday).”
Although details were not provided, Presidency sources revealed that approximately 40 memos were presented, but the council couldn’t address them all, prompting the decision to reconvene the following day to tackle the backlog.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, and Head of the Civil Service of the Federation Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan were present at Monday’s FEC meeting. This session marked the return of all ministers after the last meeting on March 25, 2024.
Before the closed-door session began, the cabinet observed a minute of silence in honor of two former ministers, Professor Fabian Osuji and Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, who passed away recently. Osuji served as Minister of Education during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s tenure, while Onu was Minister of Science and Technology during President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
Additionally, Tinubu administered the oath of office to two new Federal Commissioners of the National Population Commission, Fasuwa Johnson Johnson (Ogun State) and Amidu Tadese Raheem (Osun State). This swearing-in ceremony followed that of 17 other commissioners in March.
The rescheduling of FEC meetings is not uncommon, having been a regular occurrence during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
