The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals have apprehended four Chinese individuals at an unauthorized mining site in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, where lithium is unlawfully traded.

Babawale Afolabi, the NSCDC spokesperson, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, highlighting the intensified efforts of the specially trained NSCDC personnel acting as Federal Government Mining Marshals to curb illegal mining activities that undermine the nation’s economy.

During a sting operation based on credible intelligence, the Mining Marshals uncovered the illicit mining site where lithium was being traded. Four Chinese nationals were apprehended during the operation, and preliminary investigations revealed their involvement in running the illegal site.

ACC. Attah John Onoja, the Mining Marshall Commander, explained that the seized minerals would be confiscated in accordance with Section 146 (b) of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2007. The Chinese nationals were arrested after they refused to comply with the invitation for questioning.

Onoja stated that an application would be filed in court for the forfeiture of the impounded lithium minerals, with the proceeds remitted to the Federal Government. Investigations also revealed that the minerals were being disposed of without the required license.

The arrested individuals confessed to the illegal activity, admitting that they lacked the necessary certificates or licenses to engage in solid mineral trading. They were found to be operating under the guise of HOSAN AGRO-ALLIED COMPANY LTD, which was registered for agricultural-related activities.

The Federal Government’s commitment to eradicating illegal mining activities and mineral theft across the country remains steadfast. NSCDC Commandant General, Dr. Ahmed Audi, has urged the Mining Marshals to diligently work towards eliminating illegal mining practices in the country.
