President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government has announced the suspension of Dana Air’s Air Operators Certificate (AOC). This decision was communicated in a statement by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) on Wednesday evening.

The action comes in response to an incident where a Dana Air plane from Abuja veered off the runway at Lagos airport and into a nearby field within 24 hours. The aircraft, carrying 83 passengers and crew members, safely disembarked, but emergency responders and regulatory agencies initiated an investigation into the incident.

Pending the findings of the investigation by the Nigerian Safety and Investigation Bureau, the NCAA deemed it necessary to conduct an audit of Dana Air’s operations. The suspension of Dana Air’s AOC was confirmed in a letter signed by the Acting Director of NCAA, Chris Najomo.

The letter stated, “As a precautionary step, and in accordance with Sec 31 (7) of the Civil Aviation Act 2022, the Authority has imposed a suspension on your Air Operator Certificate (AOC) with effect from 24th April, 2024 at 23:59 to allow for a thorough safety and economic audit.”

The safety audit will involve re-inspection of the organization, procedures, personnel, and aircraft, while the economic audit will evaluate the airline’s financial health to ensure its capability to sustain safe flight operations.

Earlier, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, expressed displeasure with the incident involving a Dana aircraft and directed the NCAA to initiate the suspension of Dana Airline’s fleet until a comprehensive audit could be conducted.

The Ministry’s letter emphasized the paramount priority of safety and well-being of citizens and travelers, directing the NCAA to ensure full compliance with aviation regulations in the audit, covering safety protocols, maintenance procedures, and financial health.

This decisive action underscores the government’s commitment to aviation safety and regulatory compliance, aiming to safeguard the interests of all stakeholders involved.
