Alfred Omakwu, the Chairman of the Otukpo Local Government, confirmed the distressing events to the media, revealing that the assailants first targeted Entekpa village, where one farmer lost his life. They then proceeded to Adoka’Icho in Idabi village, where two more farmers were brutally killed.

Expressing his deep sorrow over the unfolding crisis, Omakwu mentioned that the situation in Entekpa, comprising nine villages, has become dire, with residents deserting the area, allowing the attackers to roam freely.

“In the course of the weekend, armed herdsmen mercilessly took the lives of three of our people. The initial attack occurred in Entekpa, resulting in the loss of one farmer. Subsequently, the assailants targeted Adako’Icho in Idabi village, claiming the lives of two more farmers diligently tending to their fields,” Omakwu conveyed to Channels Television over the phone.

He emphasized the urgent need for immediate action from federal and state authorities to bolster security measures in the area and put an end to the escalating violence. Omakwu highlighted the severity of the situation, noting the mass exodus of residents from their communities just as farmers should be preparing for the upcoming planting season.

“These relentless attacks have plagued us since the onset of the season. We implore both the federal and state governments to expedite the deployment of security forces to quell these assaults,” Omakwu pleaded.

The recent attack adds to the growing list of incidents in Benue State, particularly in rural areas, where herdsmen attacks have become a persistent concern. Communities across various local government areas, including Otukpo, Apa, Agatu, Gwer West, Makurdi, Guma, Logo, Ukum, Kwande, and Gwer East, have been affected by such violence.

The gravity of the situation was underscored on March 7th, 2024, when the state government held a mass burial for eighteen victims of these attacks, underscoring the urgent need for decisive action.
