FG Urged To Pursue Release Of Nigerians Detained In Cameroon....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Abdul Oroh, a former member of the House of Representatives and civic rights lawyer, has called on the Federal Government to diplomatically seek the release of Nigerians detained by Cameroonian authorities.

Oroh made this plea during a news conference in Abuja after submitting a petition to the National Assembly on behalf of the detained Nigerians.

The detainees were arrested at Nera Hotel in Abuja on January 5, 2018, by security agents and subsequently repatriated to Cameroon, where they faced trial by a military tribunal and received life sentences for terrorism and secession-related charges.

“We urge our parliament to intervene for the release of these individuals. Perhaps through dialogue, peace negotiations can be initiated because these individuals desire peace. They long to return home and for their communities to experience peace,” Oroh stated.

He emphasized that negotiation requires the freedom of the detainees, highlighting that one of them is a 65-year-old former deputy registrar of ABU. According to Cameroonian law, sentencing a 65-year-old to life imprisonment is not permissible. Instead, the individual was fined an exorbitant amount equivalent to 533 million dollars, a sum unattainable even for the Cameroonian state, let alone an individual.

The petition, brought by Kingsley Aneubuna, accuses the respondents of forgery, perjury, and criminal misrepresentation stemming from a property transaction regarding a Dutse District plot in Abuja. According to the petitioner, he purchased a terrace duplex on the land in 2018 after receiving assurances from Ezechukwu that the title was unencumbered, only to later discover existing litigation, a court injunction, and the alleged unauthorized use of his name in court processes, alongside a backdated and altered agreement.

During the proceedings, defense counsel D.O. Okolo urged the panel to dismiss the case, citing a letter from the petitioner expressing a desire to withdraw the matter. However, the committee rejected the request, ruling that its regulations do not allow for a withdrawal once issues have been joined, and subsequently reserved its decision for September 30.
